I found they really helped on the downhill bits. But I’m older and need all the help I can get. Yes they are a pain and get in the way sometimes, I have to put up with that bit.
When I had shin splints coming I pressed my foot with shoe on, on to an oval stone and rocked my foot back and forth. It did seem to work. Got good relief. Give it a go.
What ever liner you wish to carry just spray it with bed bug proof stuff and then put outside on a washing line to air. You won’t want blankets to carry

I used a Queshua forclas 40 air purchased from Decathlon for camino SJPP to Santiago in 2010 and a Low alpine air zone 35 walking up from Lisbon in 2012 summer. The low alpine only had top loading but I carried far less because the weather was so good and reliable.
