    Altus Poncho Observations

I ended up using an inexpensive plastic poncho and it worked fine over my small pack. The main consideration was keeping the boots and sock dry and I used the Frogg Toggs rainpants they worked well too. I would get lightweight waterproof gaiters next time, though, and skip the rain pants...

    Headlamp with Red Light?

Yes, agreed. To be considerate. Thanks for mentioning. Mike

    Headlamp with Red Light?

Linda- Hold the button down and you have white, and you have flashing. Holding the button down controls the mode. I also have a headlamp by Petzl. If yours takes the "Core" adapter, you could also dispense with batteries and recharge it using your same cell phone charger. You will like using...

The ultimate pocketknife to take on the camino

Olygirl - I have a couple of Swiss Army knives, different versions, at home, but for the El Camino I knew I could not carry it on board the airline (I did not check my luggage). So on arrival in St. Jean, I bought a nice simple one, an apple blade, a bottle opener/can opener, and a...

    Sleeping Pads/Mats

Hi Natasha - A) You don't need one. B) I saw one lying next to a trash bin along the way. If you stay in an albergue or pensione they have a bed. In albergues they pretty much give you a clean disposable sheet and pillowcase. I saw a number of people carrying sleeping pads, and I knew this...

    Pants Falling Down?

Okay, thanks. I was just about to measure the amount of dental floss I'll need by weighing a yard of if, then calculating the gram loss in my dental floss dispenser over a period of two weeks, then averaging. You've saved me the agony (and the fun, I suppose). Thanks. I'll stop obsessing.

    Pants Falling Down?

Ummm... I save these (for free by the way), and now finally, I have a use for them. I'll have to test them out at home though, because they do break easily. I've used them for cinching the ultra-light mesh fruit bags which I've used instead of stuff sacks (socks, underwear, toiletries). But...

    Frogg Toggs!

UPDATE TO MY OWN POST... I walked in the pouring rain in shorts and just a poncho and my socks and shoes got wet (inside the shoes). So I bought the Frog Toggs. They seem really good. Waiting for the next big downpour here in Richmond, VA.

    No tie shoelaces

Of course, you know I have another pair of hiking shoes I'm dying to elasticize. Thanks for the tip!

    No tie shoelaces

Here they are. The lace lock tucks up under the top cover with the "S" on it. It's not elastic - just a strong thin pull cord.

    No tie shoelaces

No tie laces. I have them too - just got them a few weeks ago and I'm addicted. So easy to take off - like slippers. I don't know about replacement laces at this point, just assuming they'll get me through this trip. The laces are quite strong though, and not elastic like bungee cord. Just...

    Altus Poncho Observations

So many options and opinions and much experience. The ultimate thread on the topic, and I do appreciate it. Okay. I'm bringing a cheap plastic poncho. I'll try my pricey REI E-vent rainjacket in the shower, over my pack, this weekend. (I've always wanted to take a shower in a raincoat to see...

    Sporks?

I'll buy a knife when I get there. Need that cork screw... for an emergency - QUICK - someone call Wine One One.

    Frogg Toggs!

Thank you, Chris. My walk is for 2 weeks from May 23th 2017 from SJPP. If I were doing a longer Camino, and it was colder, and into Galicia, I might bring rain pants. Thanks for your comment. It helps.

Gloves, to take or not to take...

It does help, t2anrdeo - I just looked on Target website. My good ski gloves have thin liner gloves inside which are themselves good quality and lightweight (like the runners or bicyclist's gloves). A polyester material with gripping front surface, I guess if you take off your heavy ski-gloves...

    Frogg Toggs!

Thanks again. I posted this question in another thread: Do I even need the Frogg Toggs pants that comes in the set? So what if I'm wearing shorts and my legs get wet. Is that a mistaken assumption?

    Second guessing on rain gear

Thank you for all your comments. Two questions to anyone who wants to weigh in...hahaha. 1) I'm arriving in SJPP May22, and walking for 2 weeks. Is it likely to be rainy (traditionally, that is)? 2) Frogg Toggs look good and ultralight and have had nice reviews. Comes as a set of jacket and...

    Frogg Toggs!

Thanks, all. I'll try on a pair of Froggs Toggs this week, and see how they feel. From the sound of it, it seems like a great idea.

    Help with an Altus Poncho

Oh. I thought "The rain is Spain falls mainly on the plain." Hahaha. Quote from My Fair Lady.

Cell phones and sim cards in Europe

Susan - I did the same in Ireland and it was fine. I'm assuming now in 2017 that I can do this in Madrid- buy a cell phone and SIM card cheap and use it when I need to. I'll bring my Irish phone in case it works. Was made in Hong Kong. Thanks!!
