Do I need gloves if I am using a Trekking Pole

I had never thought about using gloves until I started getting blisters or calluses in the webbing between my thumb and forefinger when using my poles. Since I work out and lift weights, I acquired a pair of padded fingerless gloves and thought I would try them out with my poles. The gloves...

    Who needs a backpack?

I had a hard enough time remembering where I put stuff in my backpack. Cute idea, but this would make me nuts.

OK, the Rice Cooker Decision has been made!

I hope you gave it a decent burial and said a few words. Rest in pieces, rice cooker.

    Sleeping bag/blanket

I, too, debated bringing a sleeping bag, and I'm glad I did. I brought a light sleeping bag that folded up to the size of a football and took up very little room in my pack. If I didn't need it, it doubled as a neck or foot rest. My vote is find the smallest one you can and bring it.

do i need a sleeping bag

I brought a light weight sleeping bag and a light liner. I'm very glad I did. When I did not need the sleeping bag, I could use it as a pillow or to prop up my aching feet. One cool night I used it as a blanket and was cozy and warm (I chill easily).

    Eso sí, ¿qué es? (S-O-C-K-S)

Can someone explain to me what Vicks (vapo-rub) does for your feet? I usually rub it on my chest for a bad chest cold, but never heard of it for feet. What gives?

My new addition by John Brierly just showed up today

Forgive me, but do you mean "addition," or "edition?" I'm not trying to be a jerk, but they both mean different things.

    Silk liners...why?

I slept in my bag liner (permethrin treated), and only used my sleeping bag when I got cold and no blankets were available. It folds up very small, and feels like T-shirt material. I loved it and was glad I had it with me.

How to get the hang of trekking poles?

Prentiss, I tried walking with my new poles the same way as you tried, but after a short time I found myself walking where I moved the pole in tandem with the side it was on. That is, right pole with right leg, etc. I don't know if it's "wrong," but it worked pretty well. I also liked the...

    Hiking Boots!

Perhaps I am in the minority, but I found a pair of Navaros online for $24 - including shipping. I had my doubts because, well, they were so cheap. The bottoms of my feet were sore (I wore them for three months) until I put in an insert from Birkenstock. It did the trick. On my (shortened)...

    Wi-Fi or no WiFi?

Count me in as another one of those folks who have to stay connected. My friends and family will worry horribly if I don't and I run a small side business I have to maintain.

Poll: Which backpacks are most popular on the Caminos?

I will be leaving Chicago on June 3, spending a couple of days in London with a friend, then taking the Eurorail down to Bayonne. So, I plan to start walking on Saturday, June 7, or Sunday, June 8. And thank you for your kind words. I will be taking some of my brother's ashes with me so a...

Poll: Which backpacks are most popular on the Caminos?

Best backpack ever: When my younger brother passed on unexpectedly, I was nominated to clean out his apartment. I found an unused red trail backpack, brand unknown, in a closet. That was my clue-by-four it was time to go on my camino.
