Don't necessarily discount your 65L. You don't have to fill it and it's a lot easier to stuff in the early a.m. than trying to cram everything into a smaller backpack. I took a 36L and wish I had taken my 44L.
I don't think you can go wrong with an Osprey backpack. They're well-designed and lightweight. It just depends on how large it is. A 55L is probably too big, try a 36L. You won't be lugging that much stuff and not nearly the load you carry for backpacking -- stove, utensils, etc. Make sure you...
I have some super-concentrated liquid laundry soap. Takes only about 1/4 teaspoon for a full washload so even less for a small amount of handwashing. I'm taking a mesh laundry bag with a drawstring that I'll bring with me to the shower. I'm going to put dirty clothes in it and a bit of soap, wet...
I sweat profusely and I wear these fingerless sun-protective gloves. They have suede on the areas of the palms that contact hiking poles. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00V5RXW1G/?tag=casaivar02-20
I've tried the toe caps during my training hikes and I find that they change the fit of my shoes, so I'm going to try taping them with Leukotape and/or use lambswool.
I've been going back and forth between my trusty Lowa Renegades and Hoka One One's, and I've decided to stick with my Lowa's. I find that the trail runners are too "squishy" for my feet, meaning I don't feel the stability I do in my boots. As everyone says it's an individual decision.
Actually, the word is trademarked. "Buff" is a brand of a piece of cloth, typically a stretchable, wicking material, that has many uses. Here is a photo of mine. The R in a circle means it is a trademark registered with the US Patent & Trademark office.
I've had skin cancers too and that's the reason I'm taking the long sleeved shirts (they're SPF 50). My REI pants can zip off to shorts. I'm also taking a pair of sun gloves.
I would wear a down jacket, for sure! I wouldn't need it during the daytime because I sweat a lot but once I sat down and cooled off a bit I'd definitely want to bundle up! I also am of a certain age so I really appreciate your comments.
Thanks, and let me clarify. I'm going by the terms used in the book, "Walk Far Carry Less" and I should have said "insulating layer" rather than outerwear. I have: baselayer: Patagonia long underwear. Mid layer: 1 pair REI convertible Sahara pants, 1 pair yoga pants, 3 pairs socks, 2 lightweight...
Outerwear is my last remaining dilemma before I start walking on September 7. I expect to finish around October 20. It's the variation in temperatures that's confusing me. I tend to run cold but sweat a lot and will quickly shed layers. I'm taking one short and two long sleeve, ultra lightweight...
Wow, all of that is 5.5 kg!? I'm doing something wrong!! My list for September doesn't include cutlery, nearly as many liquids, not as many clothes, and no hardback books. I'm going to have to re-evaluate!
