Sorry, but you really have to use them to realise how it works! No grasping at all, they just swing forward as you move. Watch the video. it may help understanding.
I have a TINY paper fan that came out of a Christmas cracker many years ago. It fits perfectly in my bum-bag and has proved so helpful on many occasions, on camino, but also sitting beside a very hot learner pool , whilst my grandson had swim lessons.
Know your feet before you walk. That's my best advice. I am now 74 and have walked whole and part Caminos since 2013. My feet keep changing! See what works for you. Lots of good advice here on the forum do just make sure you leave yourself time to see what works for you. Enjoy.
