I guess there are as many opinions on back packs as there are people wearing them! In my profile photo, you can see me and John wearing the Talon 33 which have done us proud for all our different caminos. And will do a few more yet.
Buen camino!
Hi Cailin,
This year, I strapped my collapsed down poles onto the outside of my back pack, and had no trouble taking them as hand luggage, either from London Stansted to Zaragoza with Ryanair, or on the return from Asturias . (I got pulled over because I had a plastic bottle of talcum powder...
Aleppo olive oil soap bars are good for everything, hair, body and clothes washing. They have a slightly medicinal smell, due to laurel extract, and so are also mildly anti bacterial. But very pure. You'll need a plastic soap box to store it in, and leave it open to dry out overnight. I tried...
This is a great idea. I have no idea how much things cost in Brisbane though! You increase the weight as you get stronger, which is good, and as you need it. And it is AMAZING how the very shop magically appears selling gloves, for instance, exactly when you need them!
This is what I bought...
I also washed my Talon 33 in the washing machine, hung it upside down, and it came out fine. I've read though, that it's a mistake to put them in the machine if you have one of those top loading ones with the twisty thing, sorry don't know what they're called, but you get them in Canada and the...
For three caminos, all in Sept/Oct I've only taken a silk liner, and used the blankets provided in albergues. Sometimes you need to ask for a blanket, if they're not left out. I never got bedbugs from using blankets, and I know some people see them as unhygienic , but to me it was worth not...
A light weight sarong is super-useful. There are threads about them, but I'd never go without one! It can be a sheet, a cover -up, a pillow case, a shawl, a skirt, wear it when everything else is being washed etc etc !
Hi, only ever needed a liner in Sept/ Oct, even on the Salvador and Primitivo. The albergues have blankets if you get cold, though you may have to ask for one .
And you'll save yourself carrying the extra weight, and create a bit more space!
Buen camino,
Helen
I also have walked 3 caminos with the Osprey Talon 33 and love it! I put things into little plastic bags and then into the pockets on the hip straps.
Mine is currently in the freezer de- bugging, before it goes into the washing machine. Then it will be ready to use all over again:)
Shorts and leggings to go underneath when it was cold, worked for me. It is possible to have some hot days in April. The leggings don't weigh much. Just another idea for you :)
Love it! :)
I overheard a lady complaining bitterly about the state of the shower rooms in a 5 euro albergue, saying she didn't keep HER bathroom at home like that! I pointed out that she didn't have 70 pilgrims in her bathroom at home. I felt really mean about it afterwards, but that kind of...
Hi audge,
If you look at the equipment section of this forum, you will see a thread by someone called gregdedman, who is offering advice to people about their footwear. There's also lots of other help in that section.
Good luck!
Definitely not flip flops ! I got some strange looks wearing them in cities, and felt very uncomfortable. But it was them , or boots, until I bought hiking sandals, which didn't look so out of place, even with the fashion disaster sock combo. It's the bare feet in Autumn which was not a good...
Hi Patty,
I have an iPad which I love dearly, in fact I'm using it now :) but I wouldn't take it on the camino. It's too big, and heavy for me. The iPad mini sounds like a good idea though, if its something you would use at home anyway. 16 gb is plenty, for normal use.
If you own a smartphone...
If you can bear the fashion faux pas of sandals/ tevas and socks, you'll be onto a winning combination :D
If its warm enough, you can leave off the socks AND you've got an alternative for walking in.
Buen camino !
Hi, know this problem only too well, being just over 5 foot! My suggestion would be shorts, and a pair of leggings, which can be worn under the shorts if its cold. I met some women who found their trousers were not warm enough, without a layer underneath.
The leggings were also my "evening...
People generally seem to follow the "one to wash, one to wear " idea. So you could wear your next day clothes the evening before. Some people even sleep in the clothes they are going to walk in. I had a pair of leggings, which I also wore under my shorts on cold days, and a long, light top. A...
Got two poles for £5 in an outdoor shop. Fantastic! Even now I use them for walking around the Cotswolds. I just feel more balanced and safe.
If I'd have lost my poles I would have sat down and cried ! They were my most precious items.
Helen age 55 and a half.
Scarpa terra gtx ladies boots. Even after walking 500 miles in them, I'm not sure if they really are " the ones" ! They never felt really comfortable, and although I only got a few tiny blisters on my toes, I do wonder if there is a better boot for me out there!
Hiking sandals, for an...
