    Brands of clothing (merino wool)

I wear Icebreaker and they are fantastic. They're fine to wear 7-10 days without odour. A plea to everyone who shops for merino clothes: please buy non-mulesed merino only. Mulesing is a barbaric practice where strips of skin are removed from a sheep's rear end, without anaesthetic. Let's keep...

    Camino Primitivo

I disagree. Lots of walking shoes and boots these days don't need much breaking in at all. Just give them a couple of trips out before, work put any hotspots... and enjoy the walking! There's no need for worrying about this.

    Camino Primitivo

Walked the Primitivo in trail shoes. They got very wet but that would have happened whatever was on my feet. If you're used to shoes rather than boots for hiking, go for it! Oh, and buen camino!

    Reserving bunk bed with Whatsapp

My kids' worst term of opprobium for someone is 'He/she's left me on read'. For that generation, apparently it's very rude to read your WhatsApp message (which the sender knows you've read) but not to reply straightaway. This phrase confuses the heck out of me because what I hear them saying is...

    Makeshift privacy for lower bunks

I take a sarong as sunshade on the walk, bunk curtain, towel, and extra layer if needed. I'm sure it was the camino that inspired that great saying in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: 'there's a frood who really knows where his towel is.'

    Cleaning my boots ritual

Fantastic! Really glad I chose them as they were great in the hotter weather we had at the start, but fine in wetter conditions too. I've become a bit of a Magna addict - they're so comfortable!

Packing List : T shirts : Merino wool or synthetic quick dry ?

Merino every time for me: packs smaller than synthetic, better for the planet (no microplastics; less washing), and perfect for the lazy. I wear it winter and summer, washing it once a week or less. I love Icebreaker, esp. if I can get it in the sale!

    Cleaning my boots ritual

OK. It's funny: I've never really started a conversation on this forum, though I've found it very helpful. I posted this as a way of contributing to the shared things people have (generously) offered about their experiences and reflections. I'm less likely to do so again. I'll stick to the road...

    Cleaning my boots ritual

Thanks for your replies, all! Glad I'm not alone. I also like the ritual of finding a nice strong twig at the end of the day, and getting the mud out from the treads. Plus, when on the camino, finding an old copy of Voz de Galicia to scrunch up and put inside wet shoes at the end of the day...

    Cleaning my boots ritual

Oh, thank you - I've never used hydrobloc before, but as you say, they come in a nice little tube that's perfect for being on the move. I've certainly walked in weather where you need to reproof (Galicia in Storm Miguel in 2019 was a memorable example!).

    Cleaning my boots ritual

I've spent the first morning of my Easter holiday cleaning my boots (aided and abetted by my rescue dog). I thought of everyone in this community as I went through a ritual I love: first I brush and wipe off the dirt, then rub leather balsam in with my fingertips. After they've had a good soak...
