    Too big shoes?

Yes, very good advice. I went to an outfitter and found that my right foot was a half size longer than my left and my left foot was wider than my right. I had sized out of women’s sized hiking boots altogether and went to a men’s shoe sized up one size. My feet looked like small SUVs and I...

    Type and size of towel?

Get a small microfiber camp towel to keep weight down. Consider carrying a sarong as a wrap which can do other duties: picnic blanket, improvised sac, etc.

    Dare I post this?

One spare indie and extra liner socks a must especially in the heat

Changing shoes as well as socks?

Ha! Don’t know Deborah Harkness...just a student of the esoteric for many years.

Changing shoes as well as socks?

The packing out is very temporary until my feet expand into the boots after a few days. Really only needed with downhill walks. Great for blister care too.

Changing shoes as well as socks?

It’s very comfortable and you can get it at pharmacies or online. It is processed fine, washed wool. Helps on the downhills.

Changing shoes as well as socks?

I wear boots with lots of space and put lambs wool in the front and back at first before my feet grow and swell. Then remove the lambs wool as needed I wear size 10 US women’s size but my boots are size 11 men’s and feel great. Like SUVs on my feet . Had no blisters on the CF with this rig.

3 simple questions: Lock, sleeping bag/liner, PJs

I wore black silk long johns at night, very light ones, and though somewhat see-through, I managed to be discreet with a sarong, which doubled as a wrap for my eyes and head against light and cold. This time I will take a shemagh, which I just love. Both the top and bottom of the long johns...

    sleeping bag or liner?

I carried both liner and light bag soaked in permethrin. Glad I did, as bedbugs were afoot in many albergues. Late Sept-October in 2012 it got quite cold in the Galician region from Maragatos onward.

    Container for soap?

I just got a bottle of Dr Bronners and plan to put it in a small bottle to use for everything: clothes, hair, body, even teeth. No more bars for me. I will carry an exfoliating glove to help lather up the Bronners for efficiency. Isn't that all the backpackers have carried forever? Dr...

Using Indorex for Sleeping Bag & Pack

selahilo, I think you are on the right track to treat your things with any Permethrin product you have available. I saw many bedbugs on the camino, from the beginning to the end it was a serious issue, and I was prepared and never had any problem, though I had to run out of an albergue one...

Boots or trail shoes or trainers? Not sure what to take please advise.

I wore Keens and am glad I did on the Frances. I will wear the same pair on the Portugese this year (they seem in good shape and nicely broken in!) but making sure that my insoles are adequate: I am customizing my insoles with additional silicone for additional support as they worked very...

    Umbrella or not?

Because it will fit better on the back pack when not in use. I used the regular swing with a single shaft and it wasn't a big problem, but a longer one for hands-free might be more unwieldy.

    Umbrella or not?

On the Euroschirm site, there is a telescoping hands-free umbrella, which appeals, but is soooo expensive. :( I like the idea of its being made more compact, as length of the shaft could be an issue...

    Umbrella or not?

I loved my trekking umbrella, which weighs only 8 oz. and is well worth those few ounces, IMHO. I used it against gale force winds crossing the Pyrenees and it is all plastic parts and resisted the wind beautifully, keeping much of the wind off of me. I used a cheap rain poncho and my trek...

Emergency last minute boot/shoe change! Size question...

My feet did not even fit in women's hiking boots...had to go to a men's size boot. My left foot is one-half size wider than my right and my right foot is a full size longer than the left foot. So I went with boots that looked like SUVs on my feet, and wore lambswool in the toe and heel until my...

another newbie packing list - would love critiques!

I took a light sarong and used it as a skirt over my silk long johns, or leggings, in the evenings. It was really versatile and also worked as a wrap in the shower, pillowcase, scarf, etc. A great item.

another newbie packing list - would love critiques!

Zip locks are good for toting food, and for sensitive items like electronics. I used tiny zip locks (jewelry sized) for supplements, allergy pills, floss, etc. But the best zip lock was the huge XL I used as a liner for my back pack to protect against the elements. Inside of the liner, I...

Hi Tek Vs Low Tek clothing

True enough! Especially handy to use body heat to dry your socks. Just put them on overnight. May be clammy at first, but they warm up nicely, and they are perfect by morning. I much prefer to do that than have them hanging off my pack.
