Boots or Hokas for the Central Route

Hoka lowtop - we did the Portuguese route twice in past 2 years and they served us well

Yes - I love Macabi skirts

    Hiking skirts ... For men

I have often worn kilts and skirts (more often skirts because they are lighter to carry) hiking in various places across the world for about 15 years with little comment or problem. Once I overcame the mental barrier to wearing them (which took about 6 months) and embraced them not as women’s...

    Sleeping Bag

Last December we stayed exclusively in casa rurals, pensions, and hotels and we're glad we brought sleeping bags that we could fold out and use them like blankets/quilts. The rooms were often cold and the blankets sparing.

    Sandals

No, I use snowseal on my shoes. I little old school but it works great if you are walking in leather shoes.

Is this a bad idea? (footwear)

I think the only way that you will know is to walk a test run of 12-15 miles/day 3-5 days back-to-back. This test has never failed me. If the shoes work they'll be great and if they don't they won't.

    Phone and iPad

That seems pretty expensive Orange has a package that is ~€40 that includes 100 minutes (?) of calls to the US (incoming calls are free) and is refillable. We spent less than $100 in two months with relatively frequent calls to the US.

We need some advice about shorts!

I walked May - June and wore hiking shorts every day (as did many others). But we didn't see any snow.

Packing Revisited 2016: What NOT to take and etc.

We walked May - July last year and had a couple of wet, cold June days. We carried long sleeve shirt, fleece jacket, light rain coat, light rain pants, and a warm fleece hat -- this combination worked well and I was glad for the warm fleece hat.

We also take clothes pins, safety pins, and extra ziplock bags. And we pack everything in lightweight dry bags.

Where to buy an Opinel in Burgos?

Any hardware store will have a selection of sizes.

    Knife/corkscrew

We've always been able to locate someone with a corkscrew, so we don't carry one. French country knives are widely available for less than €10 (and very handy). I would just buy one on the first day.

Calling all Techies ... re: Travel Adapter with USB ports?

It will work fine. It is relatively light and has two 2.5 amp usb plugs - which is pretty nice. The lighter, cheaper ones often provide less current and take much longer to charge your devices.

    Packing gear in waterproof bags?

We used the very light weight dry bags and after a day of walking in the rain we were glad we did. They were light (added about 8 ounces of weight - we used 5 relatively small ones for organization), quiet, and there were a lot of people with wet stuff they were trying to dry out. We also...

Gym leggings instead of "hiking pants"

Kris liked being able to layer them with skirts for more warmth and they lighter and more multipurpose than pants. She never walked in leggings only, rather as a inner layer or as comfortable lounge wear.

Mid weight fleece OR wind jacket ... Or both?

I probably traveled too light. My one spare set of socks were usually still damp in the morning.

Mid weight fleece OR wind jacket ... Or both?

We walked the Camino Francis starting early May last year with cotton shirt, sweater, fleece vest, and light weight waterproof jacket. And it was more than adequate. The only thing I sort of wanted that I didn't have was gloves for a few cold mornings. But hands in vest pockets worked great. I'd...

Allright, who has the lightest sleeping bag ;)

We just got the Western Mountain everlite - 14 oz (on our home scale). They are 850 down, compress into a stuff sack not much bigger than two fists, and zip together nicely, so I think we'll get good use out them. I think they are available online, we got ours from Backcountry.
