Sad situation. For your knee, I recommend Glucosamine and Chondroitin tablets. You will notice the difference after a couple of weeks. I am also 73, completing my Camino last year in September, taking 31 days.
Next year, the Camino del Norte awaits!

Your statement regarding pace is indeed very important especially the differing cadences. I have quite a high tempo compared to my younger brother, so I usually left him behind during our recently completed Camino Frances.
I found that walking at his pace was tiring, as I felt out of sync/rhythm...
My training had been mainly in the foothills near home with the odd hike in our South Island with my brother who will be accompanying me on the Camino. Can't wait.
I would suggest, do as much hill work as possible. This weekend I am going on a 20km loop hike in pretty rough country with my Camino load. I do believe that hard work now will be of benefit next month.
