Super Paranoid....Can i REALLY Do This?

Yes, you can do it!! Everybody can IF they listen to their body and feet!! My mantra has always been 'start slow then taper off". It has carried me for some 340+ days on various routes. Along with ' I will do discomfort; i will not do misery" buen camino--you will love it taking time to enjoy...

    Overweight on the Frances?

CF is full of overweight pilgrims that succeed!! I have often started at a 'fit' 35 bmi (do 10k volkswalks and half marathons regularly) and end at around 28. But I do have the following suggestion: Keep up your exercise and weight loss program; camino may be motivation now but the heathier...

    Increasing protein consumption

Camino only: I eat a can of sardines for a second breakfast (yes, I have the courtesy to move away from the trail!!) I was finding that my body would crash around lunch from too much morning breads. Tried sardines and avoided the crash until dinner/tapas. You can get in oil, water, tomatoes...

I probably won’t do this again

Part of the Buddhist mantra for equanimity: Suffering or happiness is created through one's relationship to experience, not by experience itself. And the rest (not in order) All beings are responsible for their own actions. The freedom and happiness of others is dependent on their actions...

    Achilles strain

Tricky it is. And I am not a medical expert of any kind. But I kept pushing (some, but not hard) with both Achilles fall 2017 on CP--left after about 8 days of walking (slowed to 5km in 3 hours) and had to use travel insurance to get back. Never on crutches or cast but was 8 months of careful...

Drink tap water between Burgos and Leon?

BTW, the animal trough was marked 'no potable'.

Drink tap water between Burgos and Leon?

Not from tap water, but on 2005 or 2006, camino a group of 6 french filled up from an animal trough in that long section after Carrion as all those of us taking a rest and shouting 'not drinkable' "no potable", nicht trinkbar' 'pas potable' At the albergue in Calzadilla that night we were all...

    Travel Insurance, Pre-existing Conditions

@Bob Chambers my search may have picked up some old site cookies that left me as USA citizen. In any case, do check out the site with your data.

    Travel Insurance, Pre-existing Conditions

@Bob Chambers I just ran your 'numbers' thru Squaremouth. And it shows a policy by Trawick for $466 covering 9/16 to 10/31, age 82, Australia, preexisting conditions, primary medical, 25k medical emergency, $250k medical evacuation. No trip interruption, baggage, cancellation, etc. if you...

Suggestion to Ivar and the dangers of giving medical advice

Lots of slippery slopes: politics, religion, medical..... That is why this Forum has moderators I believe. But maybe OP concern is a flag to get the moderators to become aware and set boundaries by warning on threads when the slope is getting too slippery into the medical advice field.

    Wounded knee in Arre

My first Camino companion blew out his knee going into Ronconvalles. Iced knee and hitchhiked/public transit in parallel to my walk. Part days/ short days by Santo Domingo and full days from Leon. Just on RICE treatment. Hard part as late middle aged males was learning to not overdo!!

New foot injury -requesting advice - do I cancel my Camino?

A sample of the many miles of cobbles the CP has to offer. My Achilles ache at the mere posting of their nemesis.

New foot injury -requesting advice - do I cancel my Camino?

I had to stop an October 2016 CP because the cobblestones wore out both my Achilles. No matter what I did with braces, tape, inserts, walking poles seemed to work. My final night was Sao Pedro de Rates; hobbled at 1 km/hr to Pedra Ferada, taxi to Barcelos, train to Lisbon, flew Lisbon to WashDC...

Travel Medical Insurance: Do. Get. It.

lissie45: I just did a Squaremouth search of age 70 5 weeks basic to Spain, pre-existing conditions, New Zealand resident and citizen and the proposed 3 policies from $238-290. YMMV

Travel Medical Insurance: Do. Get. It.

“Travel Insurance” covers a wide range of risks. And we tend to use that general term for all the following risks. Accidental Death: Sports: to cover raft trips, climbing, skiing etc. Camino walks usually do not fall in this category Loss or Delay: travel delay, baggage delay, baggage loss...

Travel Medical Insurance: Do. Get. It.

@lissie45 Squaremouth https://www.squaremouth.com/travel-insurance-quotes?clear=true has a checkbox for covering pre-existing conditions. I haven't played much but that is what I will need for next camino. My atrial fibrillation diagnosis gives insurance a big way out of any heart coverage.

Travel Medical Insurance: Do. Get. It.

Here is a broker site with many options--and a very usable web format: https://www.squaremouth.com/ I chose a John Hancock for my 2017 Portugal camino and they paid my claim for an early return (blew out both Achilles on the cobbles) with no hassle--just the usual documentation. I had to pay...

    Medical Insurance for US peregrinos

Yes, by all means, get insurance that covers travel events that might bankrupt you! I just had a positive experience with Squaremouth/John Hancock (American Modern Home Insurance-Gold Plan) claim after leaving the Portuguese on Oct 12 with both Achilles blown out. (The cobblestones combined...
