Walking with Wet Feet: Debunking the Myths

While I dislike the feeling of vaseline, etc, on my feet I think this should be read by anyone planning a walk of any length.

    Walking after arthroscopic knee surgery

I have had multiple meniscal surgeries owing to have been born quite bow-legged. Remove the offending cartilage flaps and life got better each time. Six years ago the same condition led to nasty arthritis and so I had bilateral knee replacements. 10 weeks after that surgery I was back in the...

Your Ideal First Aid Kit for the Camino

I love Injinji socks! When we did our camino last year we always wore either injini liners or silk liners inside our merino wool socks. My wife got one blister and I did not get any. One of our friends smeared vaseline each day, and likewise had no blisters. I am pretty sure both ways are...

Your Ideal First Aid Kit for the Camino

We carried blister stuff, tylenol and advil. I don't think we had to stop for anything else. I keep about a meter of duct tape on each of my trekking poles. Good for fixing almost anything, and can wrap around ankles and knees for sprains/strains, as well as can hold a splint in place.

Heat Stroke vs. Heat Exhaustion (please read even if you think you already know the difference)

I don't mean to be a stick in the mud, but splitting these definitions is not really important. As an ER doc from Canada I would tell anyone if you come across another person who is in the sun and vomiting or acting unusual they need help beyond what can be done on the roadside. Create shade...

Anyone trek The Camino with plates and screws in their ankle?

I have bilateral knee replacements. Last autumn we did the CF, and then on to Finisterre. For me the arthritic joints that were not replaced were the troublemakers. The knees did very well. I expect your new hip will be fine.

Anyone trek The Camino with plates and screws in their ankle?

Make sure it feels perfect, not just Ok. As well, let your ortho know you are doing 800 km by foot. Sometimes people do not really understand the camino is truly all by foot.

Anyone trek The Camino with plates and screws in their ankle?

Some plates and screws are very shallow under the skin surface, and if these rub inside a shoe can be very destructive. I would expect your ortho surgeon will take those out if they pose a risk of ulcerating the skin. The other concern with 'overuse' is sometimes a tendon can be damaged by...

    Travel mug. Yes or no?

I have Parkinson's, so my tremor is at rest, not during activity. If I let my hand rest touching something though, or hold something for too long without moving, my tremor starts up. I have spilled a lot of coffee by touching a regular cup while talking, or thinking about something else. I...

    Neuropathy tips

Hello We are presently in Sarria, having started in SJPdP. I have a neuropathy that limits my sensation but always makes me feel my socks are balled up under my toes. For me, probably the most important thing was preparation. I walked in my hiking runners for about a month with different sock...

To Those of you with New Hips

I had bilateral knee replacements done in the summer of 2017. I did agressive physio post-surgery, I was 57 at the time. 10 weeks later we did a four day 52 km hike in the Canadian Rockies. This month was to be our first camino frances. COVID of course messed up our plans, but for the last...
