I agree with using compression stockings. Put them on before you get out of bed in the morning so any swelling will be minimal. Be sure you use these on training walks before you travel to make sure the ones you choose will work for you. If you feet/legs are really swollen at the end of the day...

I regularly get blisters under the toenails of my second toes even though my shoes and socks are roomy and I never feel my toes hit anything. They fall off after a couple of days. If you are using communal showers, I would definitely recommend using an antifungal cream on the "lost nail" toes...
