Hi,
Can anybody recommend a Gite in Gramat? There seem to be a good number of places to stay, but I would like something near the GR if that's possible. A place oriented toward walkers would be nice, but not required. I have the Cicerone guide and know about The Spreadsheet.
Thank you,
-mike
I started walking from LePuy on May 13 last year.
Train from Lyon via St. Etienne is easy, I took the train paris to Lyon so don't know about the lyon airport to downtown connection..
It's not too early to make reservations now. I'm booking now for a section Nasbinals to Rocamadour in...
(the OP asks specifically about France)
Last year walking from Le Puy I was on Bouygues telecom. (via eSim) it was fine for coverage and data speeds. I think Orange might have better support for English speakers, maybe. They *market* better to English speakers. :) I had to get help from a French...
I have not walked in Spain, so I can only offer a brief summary of my experience.
I walked last year Le Puy to SJPDP starting May 13. I was 64 years old, and I live in Colorado so the elevation early on was not an issue for me. I tried to aim for 15 km per day which was great for my feet, but I...
I walked Le Puy to SJPdP starting in May this year. It was cool the first two weeks. All the gites had blankets. I was never cold. Often too warm. I had a liner only.
it rained the day before I did the descent into monistrol, but little or no rain on that day. it's a steep descent, go slowly. I did not have poles, but used trees for stability at times. the ascent was steep, but did not stress me like the descent did. I had a night's sleep between the two.
my first two nights were montbonnet and then monistrol. the descent into monistrol is very steep. I thought that descent was tougher than the climb out of monistrol the next day.
the wise pilgrim app has an elevation profile diagram that is nice and detailed
I am three days away from sjpdp now in Lichos. Walking solo. Started in Le Puy on May 13. May was very busy. I had booked the first 8 days two months in advance, but finding the gites before conques was very difficult. After Conques, it got easier, and after Cahors, even easier.
In May it was...
I am on the VP now, leaving Cahors tomorrow morning. The podiensis app has been useful mostly for the maps and elevation profile.
I can contribute some first hand info on accommodations where I've stayed, and maybe some photos. my photos are mostly scenery and buildings not of gites or people...
I have not walked CF, so can't compare. Not speaking good French, it's a bit isolated, lots of time for thinking. Can be a bit of a mental challenge. I have been physically challenged for some bits, but the difficult terrain is some relatively short steep climbs, not hours and hours of hard work.
it was tough to find places between le puy and conques in may this year. It has gotten easier since conques and feels even easier after Cahors.
I find it easier to make one booking a day than trying to do several in one day since one booking is dependent on the previous night...
I'm trying to...
walking VP right now. I'm in cahors. the route is marked very well, except maybe not through the larger towns. The wise pilgrim "podiensis" app is great for location and confirming I'm on the path if I havent seen the red and white blaze for a while. 4g cell coverage has been good along the...
I am in Cahors on Le Chemin right now. I can call and ask about a room in French. About half the time, people respond in English, of the remaining half, half of them give me a slow and simple enough response that were good. The remaining 25% use fancy words from the 99% of French that I dont...
there is compostelBus. https://www.bus-chemin-compostelle.com/ which runs a daily round-trip from Le Puy to conques with stops at the larger towns. the Miam Miam Dodo guide has two pages of taxi companies.
I start from Le Puy on May 13. I've recently been emailing gites for bookings. A couple of no response, but only one "complet" so far and that was Ferme du Barry (for 18 May, a public holiday) which seems to have a lot of good reviews. My requests have been in French, one or maybe two have...
No direct experience here, but I find the info on gronze very useful even though in Spanish (3 study yrs in high school, long ago) here is the page that include Le Puy https://www.gronze.com/etapa/le-puy-en-velay/saint-privat-dallier
I plan to stay two nights in Le Puy and am kind of leaning...
I have enjoyed this blog: https://walking500more.wordpress.com/2018/09/09/summery quite a bit. I'm pretty sure the author is a member on this forum. She writes and photographs well. I think she gives a pretty good snapshot of the nationalities of people she meets. She describes a May start in...
