    Shoes for the Salvador

I wore Altra LP 6 mids, but it was October and a bit cooler. This time I will be going in Altra LP 7's without the raised ankle mid-height. And as I recall, there were several people wearing other kinds of trail shoes and trail runners on the San Salvador when I was there. This time I will...

Vicious dog around Pajares/San Miguel del Rio?

Absolutely!! And I loved that walnut cracker so much that I bought one for home when I returned to Canada.

Vicious dog around Pajares/San Miguel del Rio?

totally agree about the albergue. There was a wonderful communal meal for supper, a sunny patio, laundry service provided (so appreciated in the shoulder season when it cools too early to dry clothes at the end of the day). Lovely bathrooms, kitchen if one wishes to cook one's own (though one...

Vicious dog around Pajares/San Miguel del Rio?

Yeah, those are not the dogs... I met them too. The lone dog I am thinking of was threatening with all the non-confrontational behaviours in full play from the humans. My walking companion on the day was a guy from rural Portugal, used to such dogs, and even he was rattled. A pilgrim who was...

    Fall/Autumn on the San Salvador

I agree with Trecile. I went in October last year and it was wonderful.

LIVE from the Camino My Camino de San Salvador

Just to note that while the river route is very pretty, it does not offer a gas-station with small tienda (complete with decent espresso based drinks, tortilla, and provisions). I think that the station I am think of is about 6 K out of Leon, just at the municipality limits and if you go that...

Salvador/Primitivo in June... Will I be alone?

I think that’s about typical. When one looks to the albergues on the Salvador, capacity seems to be about 20 at most. When I was on it, at the tail end of the season last year I think there were about a dozen of us. There were a few who blew through very fast to be seen on only one night, doing...

Sleeping bag or liner on the Salvador/Primitivo?

I did that combination last fall in months that were starting to get cooler. Your liner will be enough. If you are chilly at night, wear a base-layer and take water bottle with some hot (not boiling!!) water in it to bed and put it inside your liner; it will function like a little radiator.

Vicious dog around Pajares/San Miguel del Rio?

Hmmm. Perhaps one ought to try to walk at least in pairs for a while until one gets past the lone dog. I would never go in that spot alone again, especially as I am smaller than that dog.

Vicious dog around Pajares/San Miguel del Rio?

I am... and I guess on balance, I'd go that way if alone rather than face *that* dog.

Vicious dog around Pajares/San Miguel del Rio?

Interesting, and yes... it was on the right hand side of the path when it just lost its mind at us.

Vicious dog around Pajares/San Miguel del Rio?

Yes, it's a personal choice, and I suppose I have my pick because I've seen the beautiful path, and managed not to be mauled, but that was luck. If I do the walk again (I can't believe I'm thinking of it), I will go the road route. TBH, green hills and valleys get really tedious to me after a...

Vicious dog around Pajares/San Miguel del Rio?

yes. down in the green, lush valley.... probably an hour?? after leaving Pajares. I really cannot be sure of the time beyond now... walking something like 4.5-5.5 K per hour. It was after I'd met the very nice dogs on a ridge beyond the highway crossing. They were doing their jobs and paid us...

Vicious dog around Pajares/San Miguel del Rio?

Instead of going to Llanes one can go to Puente. It requires re-arranging your travels a bit, BUT, were I doing this again, and were I to be alone, being a very small person and having a history of having been mauled by a dog when I was a child, I would stop on the previous night in Buiza, and...

Vicious dog around Pajares/San Miguel del Rio?

I agree with the principle, but in practice… I wish I had known about that dog; I’d have gone the alternate route. I was lucky that there was a very tall young man who went between me and the dog and we both averted our gaze, went very slowly and avoided an attack from the snarling dog. The...

Vicious dog around Pajares/San Miguel del Rio?

Encountered such a dog in the route heading down into the valley after Pajares and before the ascent to LLanes de Somerón. November '22.

New variant for the Salvador —Camino Allerano

Will the cathedral in Oviedo also recognize this one? And will it be every bit as tough? I am asking about the difficulty because my beloved is very vertiginous and could not possibly go on his own on those narrow ledges between La Robla and Chanos... (to give an idea: he collapsed and clung to...

    San Salvador

Yes, this is the route I was referring to, but it is also possible to stay more on the road, and I might even prefer that if I were to do it again. “No shop/food in Buiza, only in Pola de Gordon.” I did not mean to imply that there ought to have been food in Buiza (though my guide did indicate...

    San Salvador

I agree about taking the path to Sta. Martin.... and I should have taken the road-way after Pajares as well. I was very fortunate that a young pilgrim ahead of me knew I was coming and waited 10 minutes or so for me to catch up so that he could stand between me and the *very, very* agressive...

    San Salvador

Plus free entry to the Cathedral museum (and it is truly very impressive!).
