I hiked it with the Spanish guidebook and left the maps behind due to weight concerns. My Spanish is rudimentary but the guide was perfect. The Amigos need support so go for it!
If you need reassurance, contact me with your details and I will send/give you my copy. I simply loved Avila and...
Could not agree more! I went to Tasmania to hike the Cradle Mountain Overland Track on an organised trip. Ridiculously expensive for a daily 2 minute showerlet and 10 am starts. Converted me to tent carrying in Nordic countries (I highly recommend the Kungsleden in north Sweden, crossing the...
Hello Laurie. When I stayed at the lovely albergue (it had solar panel windows in the living area - something I have never seen before or since....) I was on the lookout for the birthplace of St T of A. The house is/was a self-managed community centre in the throes of refurbishment. I...
Hello Laurie
I am in Béjar and heading up to Zamora. Maybe I will finally catch up with you!
All best - Felipe Peregrino
ps Semana Santa has been great but some accommodation issues noted after Caceres due to numbers...
Hello. I walked it several years ago and was in touch with Laurie en route. Try to stay two nights in Avila. A great place and great food. I stayed a little ways out of town at the Youth Hostel rather than the riverside Albergue (only one night's stay allowed...) I also made up my own way before...
A few of us stayed here or somewhere very similar. However, there was an ALL NIGHT basketball tournament which no-one told us about and it was a sleepless soirée! At least I was on the road early.. I remember cleaning up and throwing junk away... in 2014 I believe.
Thanks Alan - you bring back many memories.... but during which month/s did you walk, as a matter of interest? And rain me, where was the wonderful Art Deco museum?
I would start in Valencia and enjoy the town. Then take the train from the gorgeous period station for the first two days walking as there is a lot of asphalt and suburbia (I know you/others may not agree: it is a suburban train service so there are masses of stops and you can get out when you...
I did it too... and there is another thread you should look at. Especially Peregrina2000 knowledgeable comments. Best experience was staying with the nuns at Toro; the jewel of the trip was Temleque. I met several pilgrims who were giving up due to the solitude, intense heat and long distances...
I forgot to mention Tembleque. Loved it. Had a whole apartment to myself with fabulous views for Euros 20 by asking at the bar opposite the church when I came into the town. A jewel of a place.
You are brave! It is not my favourite of caminos... but check previous blogs including that of Peregrina2000 (Laurie Reynolds). Short days and some long stretches...
Do get the guidebook from the Amigos of Valencia... slightly out of date but in English. I did not take the separate large maps...
I am just back from the via Tolosana and the Aragones.
I completed the Levante a few years back... we were very few on the journey and I met several who gave up en route. The highlights were Toledo and Avila. I cannot say the landscapes enthralled me. It was often confusing, arid and...
Yes Laurie. You are so right. Walking in towards Toledo, once over the brow of the last hill, you caught the same view as El Greco of Toledo. Unforgettable. Thanks for the tourist bracelet advice.... I plan to go back. To go back to the YHA membership card - this allowed me to RESERVE a place...
Remember that the airport bus takes you very near to the Pension Paris. With regards to the Amigos Guide, I would just say that I never used the maps... It is too heavy a combination and they are impossible to consult easily. Actually I never took the maps with me. The guide itself was getting...
I do hope that you have factored a day in Valencia itself. Do get to the railway station for some great tilework.. As well as the obvious sights. I stayed at the Pension Paris on the recommendation of another site user and it was ideal and on the bus route from the airport. The blog of...
