I got my compostela last week, and the process (almost) couldn't have been easier. Registered online the day we arrived, and headed to the PO the next morning. Showed the guy at the door my number, and he sent me on to the office downstairs to get my line number. Honestly, that was the only...
I see this is a very old thread on the words carved into the pavement as you walk into Santiago on the Frances. NOT going to argue about who wrote it, I'm wondering if anyone has an exact location (Google pin, or whatthreewords....). I'm walking part of the Portuguese in May, and want to...
Thank you, Ivar! We'd made tentative plans to head up to Santiago for a couple of days before Christmas, but things got complicated down here in Lisbon, so we have to cancel. The pictures offer some small solace, and there's always next year!
My husband is my roadie when I walk (bad back for him so no long distance walking), so he stations himself in the Praza to get the picture of my arrival. Then we head someplace for a restorative glass of wine (last two times were at the outdoor terrace at the Parador - lots of pilgrim watching...
Oh, this makes me so happy! Husband and I are moving to Portugal this year, and I told him that our first trip once we're settled will be to Santiago.
Oh, this is magnificent. Can't wait to go back to Santiago.... We're moving to Portugal as soon as we can get our visas, so it will be an easy (and frequent!) trip.
My last two Caminos, I got up early in the morning the day after my arrival, and strolled down to the PO at 8 am, where I waited in a very short line to obtain my Compostela. I treasure the memory of those strolls through the quiet city, with beautiful slanted light, and the only noise being...
I love the 8 am stroll through Santiago - the city is quiet and empty, with the first peregrinos of the day arriving, and shopkeepers sweeping their steps. You go to the Pilgrims' office, then to the cathedral to hug the saint without any lines - it's heavenly.
Don't forget that Easter last year was at the end of March, so walking conditions wouldn't have been nearly as favorable. This year's very late Easter probably accounts for some of the increase.
I saw the Botafumeiro swing on my first Camino, and started weeping, out of nowhere. It was moving and overwhelming. That being said, I didn't see it on my 2nd or 3rd Caminos, and while I was sorry to have missed it, I will never forget that first rush of emotion, which probably can't be...
I walked my 3rd Camino this year (Portuguese, from Baiona), and once again it made me smile to see the total numbers and know that I was one of them. And a special smile that I was part of the contingent that tipped women over the top. :-)
