Merino wool dries within a few hours, actually quicker than nylon. The best part,, is that it is light weight and does not smell even after being soaked in sweat.
I was skeptical but bought them and have trianed in them all the time
Hi Dan, you already got lots of advice that's why no more advice from me. The only thing I want to say is, that my pack was 9kg. and it was very comfortable . I had no problems with it what so ever. One thing more, I'm 1.97 mtr. tall and I'm 92kg. So the pack for me was o.k.You have all been such a GREAT help from Day 1 when I joined this months ago. I am training and want to lighten my current load. I am torn as to what to ditch and what not to.
I welcome any comments as they are ALL helpful.

Nah, Merino does not dry as fast. Perhaps in strong sun, but certainly not in humid conditions. But at least it doesn't smell as bad as synthetics so you can wear it for more than 1 day at a time. But if you wash and it starts to rain. You are walking hanf naked and carrying dame clothes é. Been there, done that. Never again.Merino wool dries within a few hours, actually quicker than nylon. Your Gregory Contour 50 seems large for 8.5kg, but it looks like you're getting great suggestions for your list. I'm a newbie, so I'm often theI love my mini-ipad on the Camino as I like to read. Your backpack seems very heavy to me. Mine is under a kg. Foe evening shoes, look at plastic Birkenstocks, they have support and woman' size 9 pair weight 150g.
Dan, thanks for the info on Merino Wool. I will need to check into it. I too don't like nylon but wanted something light and dried fast.

I have found that I only needed two changes of clothes total and one super light fleece in the summer. You have, in my opinion, one extra pair of shorts as extra jackets than I would take and every gram counts in my book. Also the two best pieces of advice I received were 1) smart wool socks and 2) petroleum jelly ... Use both every day for NO blisters. These two things worked exceedingly well for me.

Dan, The weight all depends on what you wish to carry. I carried a lot more than that over the Camino and did not worry to much. You have all been such a GREAT help from Day 1 when I joined this months ago. Hi Hi Dan
My Icebreaker underwear was brilliant and worth the extra weight.
Your Gregory pack is heavy, but with only 3 weeks to go .... stick with it
Tia Valeria's suggestion of Sea to Summit packs is spot on. Very very light but still useful
for shopping trips or taking the essentials if you chose to use Jacotrans.
I took one 0.75 litre bottle and was able to fill it throughout the day.
The sewing kit ? Strewth but that sounds heavy.
No need for a solar charger. You can plug into the mains anywhere.
iPad Mini ? What's that giving you that isn't already on your phone ? Why not use this trip to talk with
people or just gaze into space ? " What is this life if, full of care
We have no time to stand and stare"
My big breakthrough came when I took all the stuff I was unsure that I needed and placed it together
in a single bag and then weighed it. From memory, it came to over a kilo. I left it all behind.
The consistent message from experienced walkers on this forum has been that lighter is better. Plus, it's not
a wilderness walk. You can always buy on the way if you really need something
Have a great time
Buen Camino
If you have things down to a reasonable weight, taking the ipad mini might enhance your experience enough to make it worth carrying - especially if you don't take that heavy daypack, the solar charger and the 85-g sewing kit!
[By the way, placing photos strategically on the blog posts might be somewhat futile. I used to spend a lot of time doing that but then noticed that they end up being positioned differently when viewed on different devices anyway.]
Hi Dan, I discovered the soap leaves a few years ago, and have them in my purse, in my car and definitely in my backpack. They are so small and so light. Good on you. Buen Camino.Hey C clearly.
I swapped day packs and got that Really Light Day pack Sea to Summit that was suggested. Sewing kit replaced too. I also found a great alternative to bar soap that a fellow recently returned pilgrim used... Soap leaves! They look like those slim listerine breath sheets that you peel off for breath freshening. Very very light!
You all have been so helpful!
Dan
Perhaps there are different brands? Mine are 'Sea to Summit' www.seatosummit.com.au. The come in a very small (recyleable) case and have 50 leaves in each. I've been using them for several years and they've worked great, but yes, good idea to try them first.I have not had any luck with those soap leaves. I found you had to use many of them to get any kind of action from them... Perhpas worth it to try at home first.
The other important metric is your height. If you are 2 m tall, 220 lb is a reasonable weight, at the upper end of the normal range. If, like me, you are too short for your weight, you might want to base you target pack weight on your ideal walking weight, or around the weight you would be if your BMI was closer to 25.Thanks Zsassytravellers and Urban Trekker. My body weight is 220. I just want o go as light as possible. The Day pack will need to be changed
You have all been such a GREAT help from Day 1 when I joined this months ago. I am training and want to lighten my current load. I am torn as to what to ditch and what not to.
