March (2015)
I will be in SJPDP in mid march and am disappointed to note that the albergue in Orisson won’t be open until 1 April. Any suggestions for a stopover before Roncesvalles?

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

€46,-
There aren't a lot of other options, other than Orisson. The only one I am aware of is a pensión / private albergue in Huntto. Huntto is about 5.5 km from Saint Jean. However, as Mark Lee pointed out, the route might not be do-able at that time of year anyway. I would definitely suggest a contingency plan of going via Valcarlos.

If you want to look into the pensión in Huntto, here are its details:

Ferme Ithurburia

I believe they have 22 beds and serve dinner.

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

The Dr is IN: So often, especially first Camino pilgrims, the start in SJPDP is accepted as the "real beginning" of the Camino Frances. That couldn't be farther from the truth. And, although SJPDP is a great place to visit...it's just that.
If starting in March especially early March, consider starting your Camino in Roncesvalles. You are at the top of the Pyrenees, in a great location and, weather or not  in a great and safe place to begin. The pilgrim Mass is special, the accommodations as one would imagine and food in town quite good.
