A friend of mine in Oviedo sent me a link to the official government declaration that "acogida tradicional jacobea" (traditional Jacobean hospitalitiy) is a part of Spain's cultural patrimony and shall be protected. The longer version of the actual declaration is here.
I hope that forum members with more "inside info" can help us understand what this means for the Camino and the traditional hospitality offered by the donativo albergues. I know @Dave alerted us earlier to the formation of a group with the same name, so maybe we have that group to thank. I think this must be a tremendously important first step towards preserving that traditional essence of the camino. The declaration indicates further steps to be taken to turn this declaration into real and specific regulations, so there will be a Royal Decree forthcoming within a year.
I'm assuming that a large part of the focus will be to help donativo albergues thrive in the face of stricter regulations of the tourist industry, involving payment, amenities, etc. that threaten these albergues' survival.
