Can anyone inform me if the Pilgrim's Albergue in Albergueria on the VdlP is open or closed? We have heard differing reports.

Isn’t this the albergue owned by the guy who runs the “scallop shell bar” across the lane from the albergue? I have never stayed in the albergue, but I remember it had a LOT of problems getting initial approval to open. In fact, I think I remember that the albergue just opened, and the authorities had to shut it down since it didn’t have the required permits. It did eventually open. He took a couple of us through the albergue before it had opened. I remember that my impression was that though it was very faithful to the original architecture, the sanitary conditions and the toilet/showers were sub-par.

Yes. It’s across the street from the scallop shell bar. It is also full of scallops.
I stayed there in late November 2017. It was very cold inside with one functional pellet-fuel furnace in the dining area downstairs. I had no complaint about cleanliness. The shower was clean and had a good flow of hot water. The washing machine and dryer worked well. Kitchen was clean with all necessary equipment. The only regret that I had was that Luis does not have a good selection of food for sale. I think his only “fresh” products are eggs and ham. I would have stocked up before the stage if I had known. We made a dinner from tinned fish and dried pasta. Breakfast was ham and eggs.
 
I passed through there in late May and it was definitely closed then. As far as I understand it is unlikely to reopen soon. The bar is still there for a welcome break after that climb!
 
The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
We stopped at the bar in Albergueria on 10/Sept. and Luis showed us the work that he’s having done to the albergue. A new, accessible bathroom has been installed downstairs - which also required a remodelling of the kitchen.
The dining area is being replaced with a bedroom. I believe some work might also be going on in the bathroom upstairs. It has taken longer than Luis might have wished but, to my untrained eye, it looks close to completion. I didn’t ask when he expected to reopen but I have a feeling that it won’t be long.
