Hi pilgrims, I'm walking from Lisbon on the 11th of May. Anyone starting at similar dates? Would like to hear your plans for accommodation. It seems there's no albergues until Azambuja, but that's almost 60kms from Lisbon. There is no way to make it on my first day of walking. I see people suggest to skip walking out of Lisbon, and avoid the road/highway walking by taking a train to the next stage, and that way I could get to an albergue for the first night of stay. If I were to do that, which town is a great place to start walking, so I could skip the road/highway?

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
Vila Franca de Xira would be my recommendation if I understand you correctly. You could take a train Lisbon-Azambuja, stay the night in Azambuja, then train back to VfX the next morning and walk back to Azambuja (18.6km). Bom caminho!

If, as you say, you are walking from Lisbon, then a reasonable first day would be to walk to the station at Povoa, and either return to Lisbon or go forward to Vila Franca de Xira and stay two nights there. The next day, return to Povoa and walk to Vila Franca de Xira, and then to Azambuja the following day. I stayed the extra night in Lisbon last year.

I also did something similar on the long stretch from Azambuja to Santarem catching the bus and train in from Porto de Muge to Santarem and then taking the bus to Muge the next day to walk in from there. But on that leg there is also the option of staying in Valada, eg by walking a short day rather than trying to make both days about the same length. Or you might have the stamina to do Azambuja to Santarem in one day!

I'm not sure how you would go trying to stay two successive nights in the albergue at Azambuja if you were to choose the option @jungleboy has outlined. You might need to choose somewhere else to stay on one of the nights if they hold fast to the general practice of only allowing pilgrims a single night. I didn't test this when I walked. If I was going to stay a couple of nights in any place, I booked a hostel or hotel.

I wish you well whatever way you decide to make your way through this.

Eileen and I arrive in Lisbon on May 11 and start our camino on the 14th. We are doing as dougfitz says - walking to Povoa de Santa Iria then taking the train to Vila Franca de Xira where we have booked two nights in a hostel dorm - €18 per night each. We will take the train back to Povoa in the morning and complete the walk to Vila Franca.. We will probably not catch you up being 3 days behind so bom caminho and hope you will post on here from time to time Linda

Hi Linda, thanks for the msg. May I ask which hostel you have booked for VFX? I might try to do same if possible. And yes, I will do my best to post my progress as I go. Bom caminho!

Hi Dennis, we are staying at the Suites and Apartments DP VFXira in a 4 bed dorm room. We are trying to keep our km down, mostly doing around 22 to 26 with a couple of short days to fit around accommodation.

Thank you Linda, I will do the same and stay 2 nights in VFX. I'm not aiming to do a lot of KMs neither, better to build the trail legs gradually. My bags are packed and I can't wait to be on the Camino!

Hi Dennis Pilgrim, Bon Camino. My friend and I are starting on the 10th from Lisbon. We are going to play it by ear. I don't think I could enjoy a 30+ km walk on my first day either. My last Camino I over planned so I'm going to go with the flow and see what happens this walk. There's always taxis and trains to find a bed if needed. On to Santiago!! Relax and enjoy your adventure

Hi Marcus. Thanks for your words. Relax and enjoy the adventure!!! Just what I need to hear. Thank you and Bom Caminho!
