Someone has to pay for electricity, water, gas and regular maintenance of the hostel for pilgrims. Bills amounting to 70,000 euros per year estimated by the City Council (which has taken over the bill since it opened just over three years) and 45,000 estimates the Association of Friends of the Camino de Santiago (the charge of the management the building). So the pilgrims will pay 5 euros for the stay (the maximum allowed charge with the rules of the Junta de Castilla y León), which will increase the turnover is around 28,000 Euros. This figure coincides with the average visitors to the hostel.
But from there to the 45,000 or 70,000 euros it costs to keep the property, the Association will have to sacrifice other expenses. And here, its president, Jesus Aguirre, said yesterday at the signing of the agreement that requires them to deal with the maintenance of the property, they will have to cut other expenses.
Thus, Aguirre mentioned that some of the arrangements that have been made in recent years as "the change of the showers, the comprehensive maintenance, painting ...», will no longer be done with the same frequency. And, as said in the past two years they have invested in improvements around about 40,000 euros.

I think it is better to maintain the new Burgos albergue than build it and let it fall into disrepair. Five euros is a small amount compared to most of the hotels in Burgos. Pilgrims are not the most prosperous folks around, but the increase probably is transparent to most. Twelve to fifteen euros seems to be the norm toward the end of the Camino in the private system albergues. The municipal and parochial albergues are still a good deal. Complaints are usually about deteriorated facilities, so the additional funds offer the potential to address the foremost complaint among pilgrims.

There have been times when I have walked the Camino and been reasonably well off. (Being rich is only in my dreams).

Other times when I have been close to broke.

What I would like to see is a fixed charge and a donitivo safe box somewhere in the building but not under the direct gaze of the hospitalerio (when it becomes an obligation to give a bit extra), so that those who are better off can help the next generations of pilgrims on the Camino.

In the years of feast I would drop a couple of extra euros in the box; in the years of famine they would have to just receive the straightforward fee.

I can think of at least one albergue where I have a debt of obligation and would wish to give more and would want a box for that purpose.

(In the church where I worship the collection is counted by two unrelated people to prevent any misunderstandings. The safe box system would not be that hard to operate.)

Just a passing thought.
