First Time Pilgrimage May or Sept 2012

Time of past OR future Camino
2010, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2024
I am planning to walk in May or Sept 2012 as I've been told that the weather should be good and the Camino Frances would be less crowded. I'm from Sacramento, California, USA. I've pre-ordered the 2012 edition of John Brierley guide. Looking forward to the walk and to meeting fellow pilgrims on the trails. -Hieu

Hi Hieu,
All the best for your walk. Just want to let you know though that the beginning of May is actually a very crowded time, as many people choose to leave around May 1st when there is a major holiday. The weather can vary in May- and there might still be quite frequent rain, and hence mud in places.

Thank you Margaret. I just found out that one of our daughters just set her wedding date in early October, 2012. So it'll definitely be May for me. Given your information, I assume that later in May is better? When is a good time? I plan to start at SJPP.

Thanks again.

Hieu

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
Hieu,
I have friends walking in May next year from SJPP, and they are starting about May 8th hoping that the 'flood' has moved on through a bit. When I walked from Le Puy, I left from SJPP at the very end of May and was walking in Spain through June. I didn't strike any problems with getting accommodation then, but it sounds like you need to start a bit earlier than that. I am sure there are others who know more about the situation mid-May.

Hieu, I may be going in late August or early September too. I am from Vancouver, Wa and hope to know at least one person doing the Camino when I begin! Let me know if you decide on September. Jenny

Hi Jenny, I would love to meet you on the Camino. Unfortunately I actually ended up leaving March 28 and returning May 20, 2012, walking from SJPDP to Finisterre and Muxia. The reason I moved the date up is because my second daughter recently planned to have her wedding early October. I also decided on late March/early April to beat the May crowd and, last but not least, for the cheap airfare. I've received my 2012 edition of the Brierley guide, bought my backpack, boots, etc... for the pilgrimage. BTW, the Brierley guide looks really good. Best wishes to you on your Camino. This forum is a gold mine of info. I have learned much from it. Buen Camino, Hieu

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

Hieu...Welcome to the Forum and the Class of 2012!

Give a good look at the albergues along the CF and check opening dates. Most municipal albergues are open year round, and some of the private albergues open on 1 April (Orisson for example). Along the Way, that early in the year, you should not have much problem with accommodation, though numbers increase from Sarria on.

BTW, congrats of the upcoming wedding of your daughter!

Buen Camino

Hello Hieu

I have done the Camino Frances route twice in the Spring; the first time in 2007 in May and more recently this past May and June.

Personally I like this time of the year for the colors, the longer days and generally pleasant walking conditions

To give you a feel of the landscape at this time of the year, here are some photos from my latest camino

Cheers

Neville

I am sure it will be perfect timing for you, things always seem to work out the way they are supposed to. I haven't started getting gear yet, but will start Spanish lessons in a week! Have a wonderful Camino. Jenny

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
My daughter and I are planning on flying into Madrid early Sept. and doing the hike. Would be nice to know of some other folks doing the trail at the same time.

Over 100 per day in both months. They may not be on the Forum, but they will be as friendly and anxious as the ones you meet here, so take your pick as you start your walk.
