Hello,
We are planning to go by car to St jean Pied de Port and wandering how to get back after we arrive in Santiago de Compostela. Is there a train or bus connection or should we fly to Bayonne? Has anyone experiance with that?

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.

P.Saffrie,

Every morning around 9am there is a morning train from SdC which crosses Spain to the border at Irun/Hendaye arriving roughly 12 hours later. At Hendaye you can catch a local train to Bayonne and then another local train TER line 62 to SJPdP. You need a reservation for the Spanish train which you can book when you arrive in SdC. You do not need reservations for the local trains in France.

I have taken the cross Spain train many times to Hendaye. It is a long but pleasant journey.

Buen Camino,

Margaret Meredith

Thanks Margaret Meredith,
This will certainly be an option. This or, if its possible, by plane to Bayone.

As far as I know there is no plane from Santiago to Bayonne, but as both airports are served by Ryanair you could hire a car from the airport in Santiago and drop it off at the airport near Bayonne.
if you pay online through Hertz the price at the moment for 2/3 days (small 2 door manual) is about 65 euros for a date in March, the price goes through the roof if paid for at the airport.

Thanks and no thanks Grayland, Walking back is no option, getting free from work was hard enough. But I bet that some pilgrims got on a boat and sailed to Eilat, laying back and relax on the beach. Now that is something to consider

I am glad you posted this. I am doing the same thing. Does anyone have the time table for the train from Bayonne to SJPP?

Thank you all for the intel, I made up a plan  I will drive to Hendaya, park my car and take a train to SJPP. Do a little walkabout and catch the train from Santiago de Compastela to Hendaya, then jump in my car and drive back to Holland.

I would leave the car at home. Parking would be an issue wouldn't it?

You travel from Holland to SJPdP by plane bus or train. Then you don't need to get back to your car at trips end. If you book with Transavia, Ryan Air, etcetera early enough its cheaper than gas.
