The stone spiral are on the hills a few km before Burgos. There weren't words when I walked through last spring.

Aha that is just past St Juan de Ortega

New Original Camino Gear Designed Especially with The Modern Peregrino In Mind!
There is more than one stone spiral. You can't really miss them, as they are right beside the Camino. This one could be soon after St Juan de Ortega.

Yes this spiral is just past San Juan de Ortega. I took a photo from almost the same angle this past September 2012. The words weren't there at that time though.

IIRC you walk past a military base, then up a hill of nothing but rock (quite the hard climb IMO) and it plateaus out quite largely. There'll be a cross at one end of the plateau and then scatered throughout the plateau are various creations people did with the abundant rocks in the area.

The writing wasn't there when I went through. Instead, at the center, people left several stones akin to what you'd see at the Cruz de Ferro. It's probably constantly changing.

I remember it well, it appears more tidy in the photo, I believe it is a pagan symbol, not sure how long it has been there?

This photo of the stone circles by ffp13 is taken near Atapuerca but before Cardenuela on the long CF stretch between San Juan de Ortega and Burgos. In these Sierra de Atapuerca hills about twenty years ago prehistoric human remains were found; Atapuerca Man may be the oldest example of homo sapiens in Europe. In season the excavation site is open for visitors as is the pilgrim albergue.

I love that region near Atapuerca- and find it incredibly atmospheric knowing early humans walked there- I got goosebumps walking there!

The exact name of the species of hominid found there was still being debated in this info from 2008. Here is an interesting news item in Nature. http://www.nature.com/news/2008/080326/full/news.2008.691.html

The news item suggests the oldest fossil found there might have come before Neanderthal and homo sapiens.
"Somewhere along their journey, the founders of the Atapuerca population evolved into a distinct species. The Spanish team has provisionally assigned the newfound fossil to Homo antecessor ('pioneer man'), a species that they suggest could be the last common ancestor of Neanderthals and Homo sapiens."

I visit the excavation site last year, it was disappointing, the tour is only available in Spanish and and you actually don't see anything except scaffolding, and more annoying you must buy your tickets and join the tour in Burgos. After returning from the excavation site I felt disappointed, so I visited the museum of human evolution ( where you buy your excavation tour tickets ) five minutes after I entered the museum they asked me to leave ( for siesta ! )
The only positive was there is a pilgrim discount
