I am planning my first Camino for May 2013. I only have time for the Pamplona to Leon stretch but wouls still like to see Santiago de Compostela.

Are there public transport options (bus or train) from Leon to Santiago de Compostela.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Peter

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
Try this bus line. I have always had good luck. Input your dates and destination:

http://www.alsa.es/en/

On a quick search I found mid-May, 16:45 departure, 6 hours on bus, almost 30 euro, Leon to SdC

Good luck!

The train with a connection at Redondela de Galicia; no service Saturday (more comfortable than the bus, in my opinion):

Tren 1 Salida Llegada Enlace Salida Llegada Tren 2 Tránsito (**)
33793 R. EXPRESS 16.15 22.11 REDONDELA DE GALICIA 22.41 23.57 12594 MD 30 min.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
If you think that you will be able to return to Spain another time and walk the Leon to Santiago section, you might consider not going to Santiago this time so that you can have the full experience of arriving for the first time on foot and all that that will entail.
