Hello,

This is my first post in this forum. As a forward, I would like to thank all the information you keep in this forum, it's been invaluable for me. But I have one question left

I live in Lisbon and I intend to do the Camino Frances in April, by Easter.

This is going to be my second camino ON FOOT, last year I did the Portuguese and I enjoyed it very much. I met a lot of friendly people and I got very curious about the French.

So right now "in Portugal" we have this crisis...and I am not doing anything, so I though, why not do the camino Frances?...problem is, I'm currently unemployed and have no money. So I would have to walk to SJPP and there to Santiago and then come back to Lisbon. Questions:

a) Is this safe from a physical POV? I can keep a 30 km routine but in the end it's 2500km...I am experienced with tendinitis...and since I have no schedule to return, I can rest for a couple of days...

b) How can I get food and shelter? For shelter I am thinking of firefighters, for food, options I have seen mentioned, here and in other places include: ask for charity, volunteer to work, work as hospitalero (but you need a course to do that)... anything else, any suggestion?

Thank you for your help,

Buen Camino!

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
My gut feeling is that it will be VERY difficult to do this with no money at all. Some folk may even think it is unfair - why should anyone else pay for your food, or accommodation. Even albergues are usually "donativo" which suggests that SOME sort of donation is needed to cover their costs.
There are forum members living in Lisbon - why not have a chat with them?
If you send me a personal e-mail, I'll forward it to my good friend Diogo ....
Good luck with whatever you finally decide to do!

I think the firefighter thing is only in Portugal, so why not just walk from home to Santiago since you live right on a Camino, then you only have to worry about food...

also, eating and albergues are cheaper in Portugal, also here it may be easier to work for food maybe in restaurants etc...

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

Hi Stephen and Pieces,

I will carry some money and a ATM card, in case things go wrong... I understand people have bills to pay... What I would like to do is to work for food and shelter, maybe for 2-3 hours a day... How can I explain this to people, maybe if I create a logo and print it on a T-shirt? Are there some rules about advertising in the Camino?

The Portuguese side is very beautifull but a different experience since it is almost empty...I am going to think about this, another advantage is *it is only 1100km*...

Thank you for feedback!

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
