Need flight advice!

Hi all, trying to book my flights for starting on Fri 30 may...will be flying from Ireland to Santiago preferably and travel backwards to Ponferrada to begin my 10day camino. Any one fly from Ireland before that can offer any advice? All flights, either from Belfast or Dublin, have a stop over, but one gets into Santiago at 11 at night, and the other I land on the Saturday morning. Either way I loose a day. Just curious how other Irish pilgrims organised their flight.
Sorry if all sounds a bit jumbled!!

Aerlingus flys direct from Dublin to Santiago, I flew from Dublin to Santiago on Saturday afternoon then (as part of the package) taxi to Sarria, start walking next day and walked back to Santiago and flew home next day, Saturday to Saturday.

If you are set on dates it may be you could fly to Madrid (Ryanair & Aer Lingus both fly Dublin to Maadrid) and then take a bus. And then fly back to Ireland from Santiago. There is a bus from Madrid airport to Ponferrada (a 4-5 hour journey and details can be found at http://www.movelia.es/en

Forgive me if this sounds pretentious, it's not meant to be.

You say the flights you looked at involved a stop-over.

Just a thought, are you searching for flights to "Santiago" or "Santiago de Compostela"?

Aena manages all of Spains Airports - select the ones of interest (ie Santiago (SCQ) and Madrid (MAD))

The airport sites all give information about destinations and airlines.

My quick check suggests there is only alternate day service from Ireland to Santiago. There is daily service to Madrid. Its about the same time to travel to Ponferrada by train or bus from either Madrid or Santiago. All you can do is identify the options and pick the best.

They were flights to santiago de compostela, it was through sky scanner that I searched

Dear Dee,
Aer Lingus fly Tues/Thurs/Sat direct Dublin to/from Santiago and their fares are good (I think). No Friday flights, tho. You'd arrive about 3.35pm, so you could perhaps get a bus that evening from Santiago to Ponferrada (as Al says, buses are direct and take 3 1/2 to 4 hours). I'd suggest you look at the www.movelia.es website to check bus fares and routes. I once used the reverse route Ponferrada/Lugo/Santiago on the 'supra' bus which was very comfortable. They now appear to have a direct bus.

Two different continents! But on this forum "Santiago" probably means Santiago de Compostela. There is only one airport. Everywhere else it means the capital of Chile. Be sure when you are sitting in the plane and they say "Santiago" that you are headed for Europe, and not South America....

@Kanga, to be completely right brain on you, a gazetteer will reveal many more towns and cities named Santiago or whose names start with Santiago than this. I had immediately thought of Santiago in Cuba, but I then checked and found many more scattered around the place, mainly in Central and South America, but some in Europe as well. I checked the airport codes, and found 12 airports include Santiago in their name or location.

So to go back to @susanglori's question, Santiago de Compestela is a specific place. While it is commonly referred to just as Santiago here in the forum, elsewhere that might no be sufficiently specific to identify a particular town.
