Hi Pilgrims

I am planning for the VDLP in late `march early April 2018 ( I know a long way to go), I have one or two questions that I need help with.

Does anyone know the total number of pilgrims for 2015 and also for the months I'm planning? I don't have a problem spending days on end walking alone, but it would be nice occasionally to have a meal and drink with other pilgrims in the evening.

Also, what date do the albergues open? I seem to recall the beginning of April but I'm not sure. Would there be accommodation available if I started say middle of March?

All advice is gratefully received.

Hi Waka, I started at the end of March this year and walked until the beginning of May. That's high season on the VDLP, but it was definitely possible to be alone, when I wanted. But I also never went without company when I wanted it. There were a few nights with crowded albergues. But also nights with only 2 or 3 in an albergue. There was not a single night when I did not run into other pilgrims.

@mia1, thank you for the info, really good to know that it won't be crowded. Last year I did the CF in Sept/Oct, although I never went short of a bed without booking I did find it a bit crowded at times. This is not a complaint just an observation.

I was thinking of starting mid March so I can spend Easter walking, but I'm unsure if the Albergues will be open.

There is a thread from earlier this year - syates wrote some very detailed notes about walking February. I think it was called Nearly Live Updates on the vdlp - you will find it in the vdlp forum. Her notes were added to by Gerald Kelly (who publishes a guide book on the vdlp that you can get through amazon). He also walked in February. And there is a list of albergues under resources section. It will also tell you opening times.
