Old route to Bruma / deviations from official route

Hi everyone

I’m working on plans for my second and husband & daughter’s first Camino, for Sept 2018. I’ve been looking at old posts and several blogs for a couple of weeks now, and feel I’m at the stage of posing a question that stands a chance of not being too obvious (fingers crossed!).

From everything I’ve read, the big hill to Bruma after Casa Julia is iconic, but importantly walking with our toddler (with a suitable buggy) I want to be away from main roads as much as possible.

Is the new route “fixed” now? I’d love to hear from anyone who has done the old version since it officially changed last summer, for advice on whether the route is passable with a buggy, the bar is still open, and any other comments.

Also, is there a philosophical bent on following official routes, vs free styling a bit?

Many thanks in advance for any thoughts or guidance you can share. I’ve got a copy of the JW guide from 2016, will also get the latest one before setting off.

Bar Julia is definitely still open, we went there last month to enjoy their famous filloas (Galician crepes) and Cocido (a hearty Galicia winter time dish). The place bursts at the seams on the weekends with locals, you'll want to call ahead to reserve on a Saturday or Sunday for lunch.

Walked the Ingles last May.

Glad to learn Bar Julia is open. Loved it.

The hill after Bar Julia is “fun.”

With a buggy can be done. Be careful with traffic. I don’t recall much traffic anyway.

But will be a long slog up that hill with the buggy. Take your time.

The directional arrows may be painted over by now. Don’t know.

I wonder why that leg was redirected?
Possibly safer?

The very last few yards/metres of the hill after Bar Julia is the steepest section. That would probably need the buggy lifting as I am not sure you could push it. It is almost vertical and the one place where I felt that steps cut into the hillside, with a natural wood retainer, would help as there was little foothold. Unlikely to happen as they have changed the route.

Just wrote it in an other thread today:
From Ordes there was a shortcut to the waymarked path and leads to Hospital de Bruma. To get in Bruma you had to walk on a very steep hill. I don't know if there is a diversion now to avoid this steep hill by now but just before the hill is a small bar, bar Julia. There we phoned to a hostal , Meson novo in Meson do Vento, a small hamlet nearby Bruma. The owner picked us up by car. We had a nice room,diner and breakfast and he brought us back to bar Julia the next day and we walked back to him without backpack and stayed another night. Very relaxed.

http://www.mesonnovo.com/. Unfortunately in Spanish but the owner speaks english. There is an emailaddress for reservations. We loved the place. Goole translate can do the job in english for you

With new waymarkings Camino Ingles now bypasses Bar Julia as it turns off to the right before it. It also skips that steep uphill. As I remember from different posts there is still a bar on the new way to Bruma but it is not Bar Julia.

can confirm the above having walked the Ingles earlier in the month. You never see the hard walk past bar Julia, nor Bar Julia. The waymarked path takes you gradually uphill via a forested route until you hit the C-542 road where the Ingles path from La Coruna joins, walk down it past an electricity substation and then turn off to walk on the flat to hospital de Bruma.

if my memory is correct, the bar on the C-542 road is called Bar Casa Avelina. I entered, but did not stay, unlike the very welcoming bar at Presedo

The bar Meson Museo near Presedo is run by relations of folk at Bar Julia.
Antonio of O Meson Novo now picks up and returns to a new point (Leiro?) if you are booked with them for 2 nights.

Dobar dan ! I have to walk the Inglès again ! Too much changed obviously. By then we loved this camino. But first the Português pela costa next week. We fly next monday to Porto and start next tuesday.

I remember your video from Ingles years ago and that was the point when I decided I want to do it some day. It happened on my last visit to Spain when due to bad weather on my first to routes I spent so many days so I could have done only a short one. And it was Ingles
Will you be somewhere in the vicinity of Santiago in beginning of June?
