Go to https:/www.alsa.es/en/ and click in the "Point of departure" type-in box. A pop-up allows you to pick a "Departure country" of "Spain." Then in the "Point of departure" box start typing "Pamplona" (without the quotes). As you type the name the pop-up starts showing fewer and fewer names until you can either finish typing or click on one of the names shown in the pop-up. Next do something similar in the "Destination" type-in box and pick "France" in the pop-up. Go back to the "Destination" type-in box and (this is the secret) type in the name "Saint Jean de Pied de Port" (without the quotes). If you abbreviate "Saint" as "St" or "St." then Alsa won't find the town.

And someone once asked "Would you know if the bus depot in Pamplona is close to the train station?"

ALSA probably has not posted the schedule for next year, so there is no Saint Jean Pied de Port yet. Typically, they start in May or just before Easter, so April can be a problem. There is service all year to Roncesvalles six days per week. From there you can take a taxi. Corazon Puro is an excellent alternative, but they may not open in April. Check their website. It keeps on giving Saint Etienne !!
For the life of me I tried to follow your instructions on how to use SALSA's website, It does not pick up SJPDP. It keeps on giving Saint Etienne !! its is a most user unfriendly website !

You could get picked up by Istvan from Corazon Puro, a private pension at Biskarret (Viskaret). Google him at
http://www.corazonpuro.es/Enghome.html
If he has vacancies, he will pick you up in Pamplona, stay with him for the night and h will drive you into StJPdP the next morning. He and his wife are great.
Buen Camino

We only emailed a day or two in advance of our arrival. I don't think you need to be too worried about booking far ahead. I would just contact them again when they return.Just an FYI, I recently wrote Corazon Puro and found out they are "on holidays" until February. I plan to book there for April 2 and shuttle to SJPP, but CP said wait until February (no date specified) to get back to them on booking.

I was going to take the bus but met 3 other pilgrims on the train so we shared a taxi. 100 euros divided by 4Hi
I know there are lots of threads on this subject.
I can't seem to answer a question about time of year.
How can I transfer from Pamplona to Saint Jean Pied De Port at the beginning of March 2017?
Thanks
Rodney

I've stayed at Corazon Puro and had them take me to SJPdP as well. It's very nice and worry free. It also gave me a chance to recover from jet lag.
The ValCarlos route is lovely.
That sounds doable, but I'd definitely send them an email asking about it when they are back at work for the Camino season. They are a really cool couple. I'm sure they will help you anyway they can.I am considering asking Corazon Puro to hold a few items for me for two days; that is, items I need at the end of my Camino that I want to mail to Ivar once I pass back through Pamplona once I start the Camino. I initially arrive in Pamplona (Corazon Puro) from Madrid on a Sunday, and assume the post office will be closed and that I couldn't mail things then. In addition, I want to get a couple of days under my belt and see what other items I can shed from my backpack and Santiago. Any thoughts or counsel on that approach?

As far as shedding items from your backpack? Do it before you leave for the Camino. No use hauling around anything you don't need. Leave out anything that you put in the "what if" or "just in case" category. Trust me, you have stuff on your list you don't need. Take it from someone who has "donated" several items along he Way.
Dear Rick
I'm from South Africa and hope to start from SJPDP on 10/11 April 2017.
T get to Madrid or Barcelona is really no problem, there are excellent connections to Spain and France.
From either of these airports to Pamplona is also not a problem. Even to Roncesvalles , no problem.
But my goodness to get any proper and updated information of how to get to SJPDP from Roncesvalles by bus is almost impossible!! I mastered Spanish long ago and have been in contact with ALSA and Conda. They are not to helpful and will honestly only tell you , "there is no service ."
For the life of me I tried to follow your instructions on how to use SALSA's website, It does not pick up SJPDP. It keeps on giving Saint Etienne !! its is a most user unfriendly website !
It must be a busy route during April to September , but the information of hour to get from Spain to the start at SJPDP is very evasive.
I know one can take a taxi, if its me alone, I cannot afford it. I cannot start with an expense of EURO 60 on the first day !!
Thanks in advance for your assistance.
Can you explain again to me please

I can't comment on Istvan's service picking you up. My wife and I stayed at Corazon Puro in 2016. What a wonderful experience. Istvan and Barbara are pilgrims as well as wonderful hosts. You could get picked up by Istvan from Corazon Puro, a private pension at Biskarret (Viskaret). Google him at

So just a note about mailing things...There did not seem to be a post office (Correos) in Bizkarette in case you are mailing something big you don't want to carry on to Pamplona although there may be a Correos in Zubiri? Also Corazon Puro does not really open until noon so you may need to time things so you can pick things up on your way through in case Istavan and Barbara are out on errands, taxi detail, etc. in the morning. You can discuss this ahead of time with them as Mark Lee suggests.
To give you some idea of Istavan's sense of humor. I was on my way out the door to walk down to the store to get a few items. Istavan said "You'll need a hammer." I asked why and he said "Well they closed for siesta a little bit ago so if you want in you will need to break the lock." We all got a good laugh and sat down to enjoy a cold beer together instead.
I did exactly that in 2015. Left some stuff with Istvan and Barbara before he drove me to StPdP. When I came through on foot, I decided that there was some stuff that I didn't need. My pack was already about 13kg. Istvan was kind enough to offer to post this stuff ahead for me as I left him on foot bound for Pamplona. He posted it on to Ivar in Santiago, where I picked it up about 35 days later. He posted it from Pamplona, and I has given him say 20 euro for this. By the time I walked thru Pamplona, I called in to see his friend in a shop called "Caminoteca" in Pam. There was a few euro in change for me and a receipt. I cannot speak any more highly about the friendship and assistance offered by Istvan, Barbara, the Caminoteca guy in PAM and Ivar in Santiago...as I was a nervous first time walker pilgrim on my own. This willingness to help made a great difference to me at that time.I am considering asking Corazon Puro to hold a few items for me for two days; that is, items I need at the end of my Camino that I want to mail to Ivar once I pass back through Pamplona once I start the Camino. Hi Tony, I cannot remember, I think it was included in my night's stay, he had 2 pilgrims to deliver, if there was a charge it was very reasonable.Hi Peter do you remember how much did it cost for Istvan to drive you to Sjdp. Cheers Tony

http://www.rome2rio.com/s/San-Sebastián/Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port shows a train route to San Sebastián/Hendaye/Bayonne/Saint Jean Pied de Port and a bus route San Sebastián/Saint Jean Pied de PortNow its established that Corazon Puro is closed for an extended period. Does anyone have a suggestion as to the best way to get to SJPdP from San Sebastian?
