Having just read a thread "Crossing the Pyrenees", I read a post by a member re- the wild ponies being bred for meat.. Are the Mérens horse (Pyrenean wild pony) not now a protected species??? Please someone tell me they are!!!

One or two of the many Camino books claim that the horses with bells are "meat horses". I don't believe it-the horses with bells appear to be the herd leader and you can hear them for kilometers. On the other hand, just why are those horses so BIG?
 
The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
I encountered them at full gallop in the fog. Freaked me out. I didn't know what was flying by.
