I am starting my camino in May, but unsure of exactly what day I will arrive in SJPdP. How hard is it to find lodging with just 1 day's notice? I see lots of posts about people making reservations for their first night.

The SJPdP Pilgrim Office is located on the camino at 39 rue de La Citadelle.

The office is open every day and in season from early in the morning until late at night ie after the arrival of the last bus/train. The helpful multi-lingual volunteers can provide you with a Credential and stamp if needed, as well as a list of major albergues and current weather/ trail conditions. They can also help locate a bed/bunk for the night. Most importantly the office is a great spot to meet/ greet other pilgrims. ...Do plan to stop and chat!

I would also that the municipal albergue in town is first come/first served, so if you do get in to SJPdP early enough, a bed will be available.

Hi Becky,

With a day's notice you'll be totally fine. Perhaps you won't get your fist choice but you'll definitely get in. I never book despite having arrivedin SJPdP in the evening both times. As MSpath rightly said the volunteers at the pilgrim office will have a handle on who has room. The accomodation is all very central anyway so not a major problem to go around until you find somewhere.

Bueen Camino,

Rob.

I have just completed the introduction for the Dutch volunteers team in the albergue in Roncesvalles. The volunteers will start on 16th of March. I am totally excited for my slot in September! The latest information on availability and booking is - as far as I could gather - that 70 beds are available every night for reservation. The rest (about 160) are first come first serve. The local albergue staff organise taxis every evening to transport pilgrims without a bed to the surrounding villages where they will be laid to rest and sleep. We are still awaiting news on whether the camparmento (extra beds in bungalows in the albergue grounds) will be allowed to open this season. This depends on the approval of the local government. Fingers crossed.

I would worry as much about booking SJPP as I would Roncesvalles.
Last year, I saw many pilgrims turned away in Roncesvalles as it was full.
You can book your bed online.

Look forward to meeting you, Zen Librarian, when we arrive on Sept 14th taking MSPath's advice to not miss the stopover in Roncesvalles and experience the Pilgrim mass.

Transport luggage-passengers.
From airports to SJPP
Luggage from SJPP to Roncevalles
I always book my first 2 or three nights prior to flying to Europe. An 8 hr plain ride to Paris then bus to the train station amd then train to Bayonne with another transfer and local train to SJPP. Knowing one has a solid place to stay is paramount to enjoying the beginning of your camino. It also gives you a focal point to consider once you arrive. Of course it goes without saying that the pilgrim office there is one of the best.
I would mot hesitate to book the second night as well as the first day through the Pyrenees is a long one and not worrying about accompdations makes for less stress and more time to rest and relax along the way instead of rushing to beat the crowd(seasonal problem)

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
Perhaps you can tell me why my reservation has not been confirmed ? i made a reservation on the1. of may but still haven't heard from Roncesvalles...
