From The Times :

It has taken longer than planned but 141 years after the first stone was laid the Sagrada Familia has passed a milestone with the completion of four towers.

Each represents one of the four evangelists, the reputed writers of the gospels, and the final sculptural pieces have been set in place: Matthew is an angel and John an eagle. They join Mark and Luke, in the forms of a lion and an ox.

Scaffolding will be removed, revealing Antonio Gaudi’s masterpiece in its full glory. A celebratory Mass will be held.

Work will now focus on the final and tallest tower, dedicated to Jesus. If all goes to plan the church’s construction will be finished by 2026. The evangelists, all bearing wings in accordance with Christian iconography, are the work of the sculptor Xavier Medina-Campeny. They weigh between six and nine tonnes each.

When the figure of Jesus soon crowns the central tower, the Sagrada Familia will be the world’s tallest church, at 172.5 metres.

We lived briefly in Barcelona in the early 1970s, so that this notion of the Cathedral being "finished" in 2026 is mind-boggling to me.

At the time, the perspective was that it would not be done before the early 22nd Century at earliest.

It is just incredible! I first visited over 20 years ago when the inside was not completed. I now visit at least yearly. It swells your heart to witness this amazing out of this world structure.

I visited Sagrada Familia 2 years ago and despite the crowds I was overwhelmed with its beauty and sense of calm. I would definitely visit it again!

Wonderful to think it will be finished.
Just to point out it is not the Cathedral of Barcelona - that was finished long ago! And it is very beautiful and, er, a lot more tranquil that the Sagrada Familia - no queues, no crowds and no charge.
It has a great modern scultpure of St Ignatius, among other things.
