Seeking a Spiritual Journey

These are moments that leave an impression on many people who go to Santiago with no type of religious motivation. Many say that in the prayers in the refuges they find the energy they need to keep walking because they discover Jesus as a pilgrim who walks alongside them, Santiago the Apostle who encourages them to continue walking, or the Virgin Mary, Lady of the Road who protects them and helps with her intercession

We need sites, maybe even the refuges themselves during the low season, where we can welcome people, for a few days, who have returned from Santiago and are dealing with the difficult task of returning to normal life. It can even serve as a place where their significant other, parents, or children who, having stayed home during the Camino, can experience the magnitude of what happened, even if only on a small scale

We are a group of priests and lay people who work along the Camino de Santiago with the Christian welcoming of pilgrims and with the promotion of all types of encounters centered on the spiritual experience of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. We offer this page to all those who may be interested in making the pilgrimage to Santiago with a spiritual dimension and to those who, upon completing the pilgrimage, want to broaden their horizons and place themselves within the context of the spirituality of the Camino de Santiago

In addition to refuge volunteers, there is a call for pastoral volunteers. This is a new program that is being put into place this year, 2004, as a result of an experience last year. This program is about volunteers that go to several places on the Camino to help in the pastoral outreach with pilgrims. They work in parishes or other church organizations offering pilgrims the opportunity to pray individually or with groups, keeping churches open for pilgrims or helping at pilgrim masses through interpreting to different languages, leading singing, etc. The volunteers do not work specifically with the refuges, although they frequently lend a hand or help out in some way. Anyone who is interested in doing this work may volunteer. You do not have to have done the pilgrimage to Santiago, although it is better if you have done so. It is helpful if you have a Christian background and, if possible, speak several languages
