There have been several posts about the problems vegetarians are likely to encounter but noone has mentioned the spanish national past time of smoking. My understanding (from the vdlp) was that bars/restaurants had a local vote on whether to allow smoking. Of the 50-60 such establishments that I went into all had voted to allow smoking. I just thought I would alert people of what to expect.

Yes currently the law permits establishments to decide on whether or not to allow smoking. Given the amount of people who smoke in Spain I have only encountered one or two "no smoking" bars and restaurants in very large cities. However the amount of seating outside bars and restaurants does help enormously and at least in Madrid smoking is now banned on the metro - although a few weeks ago I did see someone lighting up on the platform!!!
