hi there. i am a first timer starting from st jean on april 11 2020 to do the whole walk -how did it go for you leaving at that time? any comments on weather, crowds anything else you may care to pass along ?Hola, I'm starting on April 11th but planning on 2 days to get to Roncesvalles so likely will meet up somewhere along the way. Hello,, welcome and congratulations on planning your Camino. We had a very rainy and cold first day to Orrison, which we knew we wanted to make a stop at. Lovely stay there. They open usually april 1st depending on whether the Napoleon route is open by then. So we managed to get through on the napoleon, as it was open and closed depending on the day that early april. The second day to Roncesvalles was cool and misty but not pouring rain. Then mild weather for a week or so with a couple cold rainy days.hi there. i am a first timer starting from st jean on april 11 2020 to do the whole walk -how did it go for you leaving at that time? any comments on weather, crowds anything else you may care to pass along ?
thank you for your reply! i can hardly wait to get there! my plan is to check the weather right before i leave and throw in some leggings on if it will be too cold for just shorts as i’m not bringing any long pants. will layer a couple thin wool tops under a synthetic jacket, snd have a poncho.Hello,, welcome and congratulations on planning your Camino. SO just prepare for all sorts of weather starting at that time of year. Make sure you have a good rain poncho,, I picked mine up at St. Jean, after ordering from the sport stores website first, and actually it's cheaper that way than buying by just coming in. It's the Altus poncho which kept me warm and dry other than condensation, and I loved that it came down to my knees especially on the rainy and windy days we had at times.
As it was Holy week, we ended up with no beds in Zubiri and had to taxi to Pamplona outskirts and then taxi back to walk from Zubiri. I see you're leaving Easter weekend this year, so I'd definitely book for that weekend including Easter Monday. THere's always a bottleneck at the beginning as many people start in St. JeanPdP, but after about 5 days, it thins out.
We had some hot weather as well, including over the meseta, but every year is different, so just be prepared for all options.
Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions, though many more are better qualified to answer than myself. I can't wait to go on another Camino again,,, maybe 2021???
Buen Camino!
