The Beatitudes of the Pilgrim

Camino de Frances - Sarria to Santiago (2013), Burgos to Leon (2014), St Jean Pied de Port to Logrono (2015), Logrono to Burgos (2016), Leon to Sarria (May 2017).
This morning I stopped off at the 13th century Church of St Stephen at Zabaldika, about 10kms before Pamplona on the Camino Frances. Well worth visiting. It has a very interesting altar and there is a statue of St Joseph holding the infant Jesus, which is unusual. You can also climb to the top of the tower and ring the bell!

I was given a leaflet there by the nice lady (a nun?) who was minding the place. On it was printed these beatitudes which I think are quite beautiful.

1. Blessed are you, pilgrim, if you discover that the Camino opens your eyes to what is not seen.

2. Blessed are you, pilgrim, if what concerns you most is not to arrive, as to arrive with others.

3. Blessed are you, pilgrim, when you contemplate the Camino and you discover it is full of names and dawns.

4. Blessed are you, pilgrim, because you have discovered that the authentic Camino begins when it is completed.

5. Blessed are you, pilgrim, if your knapsack is emptying of things and your heart does not know where to hang up so many feelings and emotions.

6. Blessed are you, pilgrim, if you discover that one step back to help another is more valuable than a hundred forward without seeing what is at your side.

7. Blessed are you, pilgrim, when you don't have words to give thanks for everything that surprises you at every twist and turn of the way.

8. Blessed are you, pilgrim, if you search for the truth and make of the Camino a life and of your life a way, in search of the one who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

9. Blessed are you, pilgrim, if on the way you meet yourself and gift yourself with time, without rushing, so as not to disregard the image in your heart.

10. Blessed are you, pilgrim, if you discover that the Camino holds a lot of silence, and the silence of prayer, and the prayer of meeting with the Father who is waiting for you.

These are the same beatitudes that are in the slide show in the chapel at the Pilgrim's office, where you get your Compostela. I am not sure if in the chapel, if they are still doing this slide show??

Zabaldika is a very special place that is overlooked by most pilgrims. The original Camino route actually goes by the church but most pilgrims opt for the lower route when confronted by the short climb to the site. There is a lovely grass area for resting, a nice albergue with a community dinner, and very kind nuns.

We were also told that the Joseph and Jesus statue is rare, but apparently NOT in the Navarra region: almost every church we visited had a version of it! . Still, I’ve never seen it anywhere else than in that area.

If you would like to look up the website, una pausa en el camino, more or less, you will find the albergue and some information. I cannot remember the origin, but all the material is prepared by the sisters in the community there. There are information sheets about the church in many languages, some more accurately translated then others. Anyone with a language not included is encouraged to contribute a translation when they have time, via email. Or Facebook. they do have a facebook page as well.

These three are my favorites.
The nuns at Zabaldika are angels. And the place is very special.
There is a team, taking it in turns to welcome pilgrims.
Even when the albergue is closed. They fed this starving peregrina one early March day...I will remember their kindness for the rest of my days. It was very special and totally ordinary at the same time.

Hi, last September they were. If you ask the Chapel’s attendant; you can get a copy burned into a cd for a donation.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.

You can find it also on the main altar at the Bilbao Cathedral.

Love it! Thank you so much for posting this!!

The same lady was there in 2015 and gave that to me. She had it in different languages.
She keeps a lonely vigil over a wonderful piece of culture .
Sometimes, I have been that lady, as i will be again this summer. It is definitely not lonely. It is a great privilege. One of the most memorable moments was when a pilgrim asked if it would be alright for her to sing: it was a Jewish lament. The church was fairly filled at that point. That pilgrim carried a gift with her to bless everyone on her way. Unforgettable.

Beautiful!

LOVE IT!

I wish I had read this before my camino. It is so beautiful and to the point. Mine did not start out as a spiritual pilgrimage but steadily changed as I walked. #8 for me is the most special one.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Oh, this is lovely. Thank you!

This was one of the most rewarding detours I made on the CF last September. I treasure my copy of the Beatitudes give me there.
