Hi,
I plan to hike GR5 from Geneva to Nice summer months 2019.
I’m not super fit or active, don’t have any camping experiences (will stay at refugee, BB or hotel).
French Route and Le Puy to SSPP alone on 2016 and 17 and West Highland Way this fall, that’s all my outdoor experiences....
Anybody has experience about GR5?
Thank you !

It's a beautiful route with outstanding mountain walking. You will love it. In some parts, the trail is quite steep and narrow; I found trekking poles were essential.

I'm guessing you've already seen this marvelous website, but if not, there's lots of information at www.grfive.com.

Beware the tourists if walking in summer - they take up accommodations. Best to make sure you're calling ahead a day or two for reservations. If you've already walking the Le Puy route, then you know about French closing days etc.

Hi I walked the GR5 five years ago My guide book was written by Paddy Dillon and published by Cicerone and was excellent I started in early July from Thonon and aimed to follow the stages in the guide but finished quicker I took the GR55 through the Vanoise one of the alternatives and had lots of snow on the ground. The weather was variable with several extremes the worst being very high winds down south which meant holding on at times. No problems with water in the north but be advised to replenish supplies at every opportunity I camped the whole way and had no problems but used Refuges for a mid day meal when available I didn’t notice any problems for those who wanted to spend the night in them At St Dalmas I left the 5 for the 52 adding a couple of days and ending in Menton. My planning suggested 15 miles per day and an ascent and descent of 1500 m daily There are a lot of mountains but no real problems though the descent of the Pas de la Cavale was “interesting”. Any more info I will be glad to help if I can

I too am planning on doing the GR5. I'd highly recommend looking at Erin's blog as she has recently done it and posts daily blogs that are very useful and informative. She has also walked many more trails with the same detailed blogs. I don't think she is planning on doing a Camino though!

I had the brief pleasure of meeting her in New Zealand during the TA. Anyway here is her blog.

Yes, I did read about grfive.com and the book from Cicerone. They are both very detail and helpful. Thank you !

Long Trails- Nice to know Erin’s blog. And, I’m heading NZ next month, can’t wait to explore Tongariro and Mt Cook !
