Visa debit card w/o chip along the Frances?

Hello Eveeyone,

I am leaving very soon for my first Camino, and I wasn't worried about using my debit card at ATMs along the way -- until I found out that many European ATMs require a card with a chip.

Has anyone had problems using a non-chip card? Any suggestions/feedback will be greatly appreciated.

¡Buen Camino!

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Hi, bluemoon,

My understanding is that no US card has a chip, because the companies are unwilling to spend the money a conversion would require. I have never had a problem in an ATM in Spain with my US ATM card, but I know that doesn't mean something can't happen. I always carry an extra few bills with me out of sight for use in an emergency. Buen camino, hope it's a great first Camino for you. It seems like a lot of forum members are taking their first steps during early September. Laurie
