The main difference with the Irish weather will be that if it does happen to hit 30 degrees, people won't be too shocked by the heat wave! But seriously, the weather in May might be cold and wet some of the time, and it might be rather nice some of the time. I walked the CF in June, and had some bitterly cold days, so you can't assume 'it is Spain, so it will be warm'.
All the best!

Living in Galicia for a number of years I have come to expect the following;

· The weather is totally unpredictable
· The weather forecasts in Spain cannot forecast for more than a day in front.
· I know of 5 or 6 websites covering Spanish weather. At times they can all predicts something different and at the same time none of them foretell exactly what is happening at the time I an reading the site.

So to sum up, just don’t believe them and be prepared for something of everything.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Since this original request for information was made the weather has turned much worse then predicted at the time. There is now very cold and snowy weather in the mountains. Nothing was said about this a few days ago.

As for weather history sites you should remember history never repeats itself.

Yes it's like the weather 'at home' but on steroids and I'm a Kerry woman! At the drop of a poncho the rain can morph into sleet/snow/ice needles and then, if you're lucky, an hour later the sun will be burning the head off you
Think of Slea head head on a bad day in January and on a good day in July, shrink the timeframe to 24 hour period, add great wine, company and craic and there you have it

After a really fab April the weather this month has been awful. I don't think it's only Galicia which is suffering. From my window I can see the mountains near Ponferrada, the cloud has just lifted, for the first time in days, and they are covered in snow again. The snow had virtually all disappeared! I imagine that Foncebadon and O Cebreira may look similar.
Buen camino any one out there now.

The weather had been awful on the Primitivo. We have had rain every day and the mud has made the Camino virtually impassable in places. The forecast for the area beyond Tineo is not improving. It is better for the coast so we have come back to the Norte.
The daytime temperature was 5C in Tineo. It is forecast to be 22C here by Tuesday (Ribadesella). Bring plenty of warm layers and wellies or thigh boots for the Primitivo

The weather can really be unpredictable in the Northern Spain. I wish better walking weather for the rest of your camino, and may the roads be free of mud.
I started walking last year the 16th of May in SJPP and the weather was comfortably warm/hot with almost no rain at all between SJPP and Burgos.
buen camino

Hi tía Valeria,
Sorry to hear you and Terry have had such bad weather, you've had really bad luck Terry getting sick as well as you told in another thread. I do hope your remaining days on the Norte will be better.
And I hope this doesn't stop you from planning the Inglés in 2011.
It sure hasn't stopped me from planning my "August Primitivo" as the rain can't go on for ever... I suppose...

yes, I will join the marvelling... three days ago in Moratinos we woke up to SNOW!
Today, for San Isidro day, the sun shone beautifully and the grain waved softly in the breeze... right up til the thunderstorm ripped in. No one here can remember anything like this. We live at about 900 meters, but we´re not in the mountains!

I walked the camino a month ago and suffered only from fierce headwinds and a couple of days of rain. Thank goodness I didn´t wait til the "good weather" in May!

The weather on the Norte was a great improvement - 13C when we got off the bus from Tineo/Oviedo, more than double the Tineo temp. We walked 3 days before having to get back to Santander for the ferry. Good temp for walking, about 22C in the sun with a cool breeze. Lovely for walking.
More on 'Introducing Tia Valeria' thread as I get round to it and on the blog. Only just back today and we have made our advance booking for next year's ferry before we left the ferry-port
