Hi Father Scott,

I walked the first five days with my family from Hendaya/Irun as far as Gernika back in July 2013...and my goodness it was HOT!
We really enjoyed our time passing across the Basque Country and are returning this July to pick up our trek from Gernika.

Take a look at a small blog I pieced together to give you a flavour of what you're heading for. I really hope you enjoy this part of the world as much as I do...

Camino 2024 unknown starting 4/1 from somewhere.
Leaving Wasilla, Alaska June 1, arriving Madrid June 2, train to Irun June 3, start El Camino de Santiago Norte June 4, 2015.

Father Scott:

An enjoyable Camino, imo. Good food and sideria in Basque country. Some nice Communal Albergues. Lots of alternative routes options, including e-9 and some nice cities like Bilbao with interesting art. The route is tougher in the beginning but does get gradually easier near the end.

Ultreya,
Joe

Hi Fr Scott...just wondering if you've seen Fr Dave Pivonka's book, Hiking the Camino - 500 miles With Jesus. Fr Dave is a Franciscan from (I think) Ohio. He walked the Camino Francés with another priest a few years ago. His book may be available on Amazon.

I haven't read that yet, but I will check it out. Thanks for the tip.

I just downloaded it!
Enjoy the book. I met Fr Dave a couple of times, once when he came to our parish to give a talk about his Camino experience (while here to meet with the youth group), and a second time when he came to give a mission. He's a friend of our youth minister, and is a delightful fellow.

I recommend the book as well. Fr. Dave is a TOR Franciscan who did the Camino while he was 'stationed' at Franciscan University (in Ohio)'s study abroad location (Austria). As a student that went through Franciscan at that time, I can vouch for his skill in bringing the obvious to a down-to-earth level, with humor. His Camino is the reason I am a part of this Forum now.

Are you planning on turning left on the Primitivo at Villaviciosa toward Oviedo or staying on the Norte along the coast?
Last year I stayed on the coast while most people turned down the Primitivo.
This year...I am starting at Oviedo on June 18. You would still be behind me at this point.
Either way is great.

I read it. I liked it! Thank you for the recommendation. All I need now is a Camino Slogan, I 'm thinking of stealing it from our dollar bill, "In God we (in this case, I) Trust.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Fantastic. I bet we run into each other. Although I am starting June 4, one day ahead of you, I will be taking my time because I have a whopping three months to walk it. I plan to post pics, videos, and my location on Twitter. My name is @FrScottGarrett. Have a wonderful journey. I will be attending mass in the various villages but probably won't be celebrating
I'm starting from Irun June 5th. Hope I meet up with you, especially if you intend to say Mass along the way. Have a wonderful pilgrimage. Angela
