    Hiking poles

I have just completed my fifth Camino (all different), all great experiences. I have been able to carry my poles onboard, I have had my poles taken away, I have left my poles behind on purpose. This year I did not take poles, I found a great set of poles in Madrid in a “dollar” store. 7 euros! I...

Should I take a sleeping bag? (early October camino)

I have walked four complete different Caminos, always in Sept/Oct. I have never taken more than a silk sleep sheet. There were a couple of nights on the Camino via de la Plata that I needed a blanket, which the hospitalario provided. And yes you can wear your fleece and tights if you are cold.

Is Courtesy Still Alive on the Camino? A Pre-Bookers Rant and more...

I have a suggestion. Consider walking the Camino Madrid, the Portuguese Camino, or the longer and more difficult Camino de la Plata. I have walked the Camino Frances and the three I mentioned in their entirety. If you want to avoid the hoardes of pre bookers and otherwise “frivolous” pilgrims...

Very dissilusioned. Can't wait to finish

That is really too bad, sorry you are not having a good experience. I walked the Portuguese Caminho September, 2015, mostly alone as my husband had an injury. I had a most wonderful experience. Stayed in albergues almost the whole way, never ran into disrespectful pilgrims, met great people who...

Hiking Shoes vs. Boots -- One Experience

I agree, have walked the Frances, the via de la Plata and the Portuguese (from Lisbon, tons of cobblestones along the way). Hiking shoes are adequate, make sure you don't buy waterproof shoes, more chance of blisters.

    Madrid June 2017

Hi Tony, guess you are on your way by now. I have no info for you but am planning to do the Madrid route starting late August so any alburque info or other useful info you gain as you go would be helpful. Happy walking! I will watch for your posts.

    Sleeping Bag September October

I walked Camino Frances in September/October of 2013 and Camino via de la Plata September/October of 2014. Unless you are planning on sleeping outside you do not need a sleeping bag. We take sleep sacks, many of the albergues have blankets and yeah if you are cold wear your sweater.

Starting Portuguese in Lisbon Sept. 1, 2015

We are planning to start in Lisbon somewhere in the last week of August or first part of September. Don't worry about lack of pilgrims, there will be some! We walked via de la plata last September/October so have done loong stages with few pilgrims (but always a few)but it seems that there are...

    Replenishing drink

Thanks Grace, good info. Last year walking the Camino Frances, we started out most mornings any 5:30 with our headlamps. We did get a bit lost one morning (the arrow was not yellow, it was an arrow on the ground make by rocks! which we happened to shine our light on when we turned back from what...

    Replenishing drink

We are flying into Seville on September 1st and start our walk on the 4th. Yes, the temps are going to very high still. We plan on starting each morning about 5:30 so we hopefully avoid the hottest part of the day. Any other tips you can give me I would appreciate them. Have you done Camino...

    Replenishing drink

Speaking of small bars and shops, from what we have read there may be many villages we pass through where nothing is open. I am prepared to carry a full days supply of water and food each day. When did you walk the VdlP and was that your experience. Would be nice not to have to carry all that...
