I always take my kindle - not very heavy and many Camino books can be downloaded. Also I am an avid reader so can have all my favourite novels with me.
I started from Sevilla a couple of years ago in mid-Feb. At times a little chilly but no rain and lots of sunshine. Biggest issue I had was a couple of albergues that had little or no heating. I plan to go again in a couple of years and will start in Feb again.
Always a tricky subject. I asked for sponsorship from friends and family when I walked the VDLP a few years ago - I spilt the money raised between an African charity for educating children and Help for Heroes - this was achieved by using the Just Giving website. I think this is quite acceptable...
