    Poncho in SJPDP?

Not sure when you’re going, but Ivar has the Altus on sale in the forum shop. It’s not really a poncho but a long rain coat with a hump that replaces jacket and pack cover. You can also get one in SJPdP at Boutique du Perelin. If you reserve it, you get a discount.

Accommodation - to book or not to book

Be aware that May 1st is a holiday and many Spanish walk for days/week. If you are leaving one of the common starting points (Roncesvalles, Pamplona, Logrono, Burgos, Leon) you may have trouble getting a bed. I have learned the hard way (as in a very long day and got the last bed.)

Route Napoleon closed (April 1, 2024) for a few days, due to weather

Looks like your weather forecast is for Roncevalles which can be very different than the pass. I’ve been in snow coming over the Napoleon with none in Roncevalles.

Is it possible to store backpack in the 2nd Albergue?

I helped out for a few weeks at one of the popular gites. I tried to help where possible but if a pilgrim was willing to wait until 3:00 when we opened to pick it up it was not a problem to leave the bag. We would have also tried to accommodate the request to drop off a bag as long as it was...

Walking with a pinched nerve in my back

I have walked nine of my ten Caminos after developing sciatica, which I would guess if the same thing as a pinched nerve. I have 4 compressed disc but it’s L5-S1 that causes the most problems. I’m in the U.S. and I had to jump through all the initial hoops PT… to get more treatment. It just...

Listening to music while on the camino

One earbud when I'm struggling at the end of the day and when I'm going to sleep to block out noise (I set the timer for it to go off in a bit when I'm asleep.

Over 32K pilgrims from the U.S., the second highest after Spain, received compostelas in 2023, per Foundacion Jacobea

If you look back over the statistics you can see that the numbers of Americans as a percentage did go up in the few years right after the movie came out but then in most of the last decade the percentage of Americans was relatively stable around 5-6% of total pilgrims. This year it was a bit...

    Slow Walker Advice

Definitely not closed!!! They are closed for the off-season now. I stayed with them in May and have some communication with them.

    April start advice sought

I have walked many times starting mid-April and I worked in SJPdP last year from late March until April 12th when I started walking. Easter was April 9th. Yes, I would say your assessment of the numbers is correct. While for 2023 SJPdP starts were not as much as pre-pandemic, April was higher. I...

    Experience with Plantar Fasciitis

I’ve had it twice, the first time I followed all the conventional wisdom repeated in this thread and it took close to a year to get rid of it. The next time I went to a chiropractor who specializes in active release therapy. He analyzed my gait and determined that it was because my quad was too...

    Best travel insurance

We buy annual travel insurance from Allianz that covers us anytime we are 150 miles from home. I had to use it this year when we were traveling in the western U.S (we are from Florida.) I broke a tooth and had to see an emergency dentist and fly home. They covered the dentist up to the dental...

    Baggage Transfer

There are very few that you can’t send a bag forward. These are mostly municipals, but usually the bag transport company will arrange to a nearby bar if possible. There is a movement to not allow suitcases, along with the 11 in Galicia, there are others that are joining this movement. It’s not...

Pros & Cons of One-way Flights

So I just booked my round trip flight to Spain for this spring from Florida. The RT main cabin cost was $940. A one way ticket to Spain on the same flight was $740 and a one way return ticket on the same flight is was $3,683…. Yes that’s right. I go to Spain annually and haven’t been willling to...

Tell me what I need to know

Lots of good advice… mine would be that you are short of time. It takes some time to get to SJPdP and you will want to spend at least two days in Santiago and need a day to get to Madrid or Paris for you return to the U.S. This would leave you about 30 days of walking. That would be ambitious...

    Albergues at SJPP

When are you going? I always make reservations through to Pamplona. After Pamplona there are more accommodations options and you develop your own rhythm. If you are going in spring or fall I would definitely book. I worked in SJPdP in April and everyday we had many pilgrims wandering around...
