  5. El Cascayal

Some difficulty now (Feb 2024) on the camino de invierno

Damn! You guys are certifiable! 🤪😜😂 From Borrenes walk on Calle de Arriba (away from the small center square out of town) Turn left at bifurcation onto LE-6203 towards La Chana (there are multiple small dirt road tracks that will also get you there if you look at the map) Exit La Chana on...

Some difficulty now (Feb 2024) on the camino de invierno

C, I absolutely loved this detour! Have never opted for the road. It will be interesting to see how it goes for you. The Buen Camino GPS app shows it beautifully. I pre walked it on Google too. Laurie, it is the same as the track in Wikiloc to pueblo de Orellan.
  7. El Cascayal

Some difficulty now (Feb 2024) on the camino de invierno

Wow! If there was ever another reason to take the alternative from Borrenes towards Orellan this is it. Hope this gets resolved quickly.

Seeking advice on walking the alternative route through Las Medulas mining site

I love that everyone remembers it differently! Weather and time of year make huge differences. Many changes occur daily is what I’ve noted. Wind, rain, sun, cattle walking all make a wonderful difference.

Seeking advice on walking the alternative route through Las Medulas mining site

I don’t recall this at all. Were you sweating and swearing too? https://www.borrenes.org/turismo/las-medulas/mirador-y-la-galeria-de-orellan/ Opens at 11 am. Worth it for sure.
  10. El Cascayal

Growth in pilgrim numbers on the Invierno

Thinking back to 2019 when I walked my first Invierno usually in October or November, I have never met any other Peregrinos except once there were 2 Spaniards from Andalucía. And a ghastly time when there was a whole bus load of “Peregrinos” walking only on a Sunday morning into Santiago. Very...

Seeking advice on walking the alternative route through Las Medulas mining site

I too took this route from Borrenes. After Chana you ascend through a magical fairy green woods into the town of Orellan. Absolutely loved this stretch. Yes! The next morning there is a steepish ascent surrounded by mountains to Mirador de Orellan. The caves themselves do not open early enough...

    Bag Transfer on Invierno Route

You can also schedule the whole route for a flat fee which is cheaper than booking by the day. In October 2021 it was ridiculously cheap less than €5/stage for a path way less traveled. On the last day it was only just to leave a thank you note and extra €.
  13. El Cascayal

Walking along the Invierno with a day bag.

Manuel Mar. Easy to reach, most economical, 100% reliable and a great guy. He has a Bar & Albergue in Sobradelo: good food, good value and it includes washing your clothes. ❤️

Planning a “25 km or less” Camino on the Invierno

Hope your foot is ok. 🤞🤞. Get it checked out if it’s not improving. Buen Camino!

Planning a “25 km or less” Camino on the Invierno

Good to know. Even though I got a little lost and walked on the too dangerous N-536 to finally cross it for the uphill to Villavieja. I wouldn't want to miss the chestnut forest ascent to Cornatel (though I had carefully planned it for a day & time when it would be open, of course it was closed)...

LIVE from the Camino On my way tomorrow, part 2

Awesome! I bought some bread and carried some cheese, wonderful eats. It is pretty close, you hang a right down the hill from Carpinteiras.

LIVE from the Camino On my way tomorrow, part 2

You can get a good breakfast at Carpinteiras, they open early for breakfast, lots of locals. Panadería Jesús is closed Sunday and opens Monday morning at 8 am according to their website. Taberna do Peto in Penasillas opens at 10 am on Sunday.

LIVE from the Camino On my way tomorrow, part 2

Penasillas is a wonderful little town just prior to the ascent to Monte Faro. When you arrive to Penasillas, on your left there is a large cow shed, Ana is the owner. She graciously shows you her cows. Bar O Peto is a nice place for a café. There is another bar in Pendellos right on the Camino...

LIVE from the Camino On my way tomorrow, part 2

Yes!!!!! So glad you walked it! I was surprised how low the water level is crossing the rocks, every time I’ve walked over them it was a little scary and thrilling at the same time. Maika & Pousa do Asma, great place to stay. 🚶🏽‍♀️❤️
  20. El Cascayal

LIVE from the Camino On my way tomorrow, part 2

I really didn’t find the descent as harrowing as described. Picture 3 above shows dirt path next to the rocks, which was plentiful. It does require concentration. If you continue on the road that passes in front of San Paio de Diomondi it will descend but on asphalt. If you have the time...
