Should I bring my own Mercado bag?

Decathlon sells something very much like this, only in Decathlon blue. It folds into its own pouch, about 4" x 4" x .5" and is very lightweight. My wife and I are currently in the Czech Republic and use a couple of them for grocery shopping.

Safety concerns: First time walking Camino Portuguese as a female traveller

Hello! My wife and I walked the camino in 2022, and we are living in the Czech Republic right now, in Liberec, for about another year. If you would like to talk at more length about walking the Camino, we would be happy to connect with you, either in person or online. If you would like to meet...

    Refuge Orisson vs. Auberge Borda

Orrisson is a bit closer, but as I recall, Borda isn't much further up the road. Maybe 15-30 minutes?

    Show me your backpack!

You can also find after-market waist belt pockets that simply slide on to your waist belt. It seems to me that they are actually a bit larger than the pockets that are integral to the wais belt. As others have said, I prefer not to have things dangling loosely from my pack, whether front or...

    Refuge Orisson vs. Auberge Borda

My wife and I stayed at Borda and had no trouble meeting people and making friends. Some of that happened naturally as we walked up to Borda from SJPP - we found ourselves walking with folks who we later stayed with at Borda. Others have mentioned the communal dinner, which we loved. The only...

    Hiking Poles

My wife and I each bought poles in SJPP for our first Camino, and took them home with us. We checked baggage going home, and they fit just fine in my backpack. I personally wouldn't try to put them as carry-on if that is how you plan to bring your backpack. I know some have successfully done so...

I really wish I knew that!

My wife and I brought very lightweight small backpacks, like the one available from Sea to Summit (there are others), to use for grocery shopping. They turned out to be very helpful when we both caught colds and didn't want to carry our main packs for a week. We sent everything ahead each day...

    Taxis, insurance & money questions

FYI, if you open a checking account with Charles Schwab and get their credit card, they cover all ATM fees. I just transferred enough each week from my regular bank account in to my Schwab account to cover that week’s expenses. That way, if someone somehow got access to my debit card number, I...

How did you design yours and where did you have it made? Show us a pic, please!

    Making friends on the camino

My wife and I are in our mid-60s, and our two most memorable Camino friendships were with a 35 year old woman and a 25 year old woman. I tend to think age has little to do with friendships formed, while such things as common interests, coordinated hiking/talking/planning, and so forth have a lot...

Best Ultra Lightweight Sleeping Bags for the Pilgrimage in March-April

My wife and I both used the REI Helios last April and May. It was a little cold once or twice, but the albergues had blankets they loaned us to be comfortable. Even without the blankets we would have been fine, just a little cool.

Accommodation options for starting from Irun on 6th April

I walked the CF last April, starting April 4. Almost all albergues were open. I only saw one or two that hadn’t yet opened for the season.

    Shoes vs boots (again)

I like the Altra LPs also, but decided the sole was too thin for me. So I switched to the Altra Olympus 4. Much thicker, more comfortable sole, same roomy toe box. I wore them on the CF in April / May, and they are still going strong now, months later.

    Wool socks

I often hear the advice to buy shoes a size larger. I walked the CF with my wife in April and May, averaging about 14 miles a day, and my feet didn’t swell like that at all, nor did my wife’s. If I’d bought shoes a size larger, I would have been slipping around in them uncomfortably. As it was...

Things I'd bring, who cares about the weight

My wife and I took a Scrubba and clothesline also...really appreciated having it!

Things I'd bring, who cares about the weight

My Kindle Paperwhite. Everyone told me to just use my cell, but the light bothers my eyes. I carried my kindle when I walked the Frances in April/May, and it was worth every ounce to me.

Is La Iglesia de La Peregrina in Sahagun open?

As I recall, I believe it was 3 euros.

How important is a rock plate for CF?

Use your insole as a template to cut out a piece from a thin plastic kitchen cutting board. I put them underneath my insole and they served quite well on sections with jagged rocks. When you don’t need them you can take them out and they take up almost no space in your pack.

LIVE from the Camino Where to donate gear in Santiago?

I made the donation at Pilgrim House where they said they’ll put it to good use. Then my wife and I had a wonderful conversation with the folks there. They do good work, and if any pilgrims want to process their thoughts and emotions about their journey, or just talk with someone, I highly...
