Well no, didn't get back on time, one officer, one NCO, and one civilian, but only the NCO was disciplined and she was put on a detail to supervise flag raising each day at dawn for a month.
I slept on the floor with 2 other nurses in Stansted 20+ years ago after a crazy story about missing a flight at Bornemouth and taking a bus to London and a cab to 2 airports trying to get back to Germany so we could be on duty the next day at the US hospital and not AWOL. Used some UK wool...
Have used several "camp towels " and most just smear the water around on me. I do like a plain muslin or cotton t-towel. Also just a plain old hand towel that I bought at an Asian store in Spain worked fine for me last winter. I don't buy a large towel as don't want to carry it.
I keep track of each cost either in a notebook and/ or my phone as I go. If I am tapping away with my card, I am more likely to forget so I always take the receipt (even at home).
Yes, I do use my card at home and for plane tickets and I get points which I use to pay for hotels in Spain. What I...
Yes, but after the fact, you have already spent the money. How do you keep yourself on the budget while traveling or is that not a concern?
edit: ok, I still shop with coupons, too, so I am pretty thrifty...
There are fewer in inexpensive hostels and hotels near Chamartin. I prefer to stay out by the airport and then go back to the airport and take the C1 or C10 to Chamartin in the morning. (I stay on Marriott points so usually don't have to pay.) There are quite a few more economical hostels near...
Yes, they are there... All the Xunta albergues last year did go up from 8 to 10 euros though. Cash only. Najera- 6 euros cash only. All the other donativos...cash only. You do pay for the convenience of the use of your cards. For me, much easier to keep track of what I am spending (or not...
Yes, they had a really good business model. He would pick people up at the Pamplona Airport. You could stay with them and then he would take you on to St. Jean the next morning. We broke our 2016 walk to Pamplona into 5 days (St. Jean, Orrison, Roncesvalles, Bizkarreta, Zuriain) and so glad we did.
In 2022 everything was open in the summer (except the hospederia which apparently has been closed since before COVID) Our cab driver told us they have a hard time finding workers out this far from town...
Also 2023, pilgrims told us it was open when we were hospitaleros in Arres in June.
A short story about siesta from my first Camino:
I was staying at Corazon Puro at Bizkarreta (before Zubiri) in a lovely place run by a pilgrim couple from Hungary (sadly, now it is closed or at least changed hands, I am not sure which). I had taken my shower, done my wash, and was heading out...
Sort of...Pilgrim House and Ivar both take used poles in Santiago. Some people may also leave at the Pilgrim office. There is really no way financially feasible way to transport them back to where people might be buying them at the beginning of the journey and if there were that might really...
June, July are less busy on the CF than May. August is busy especially from Sarria as Spanish people take their summer vacations. September is very busy. As you get into October, November, etc. the crowds will thin. I walked in December and January early this year and Sarria to Santiago was...
Its a little late for people who already have their plans set in stone or who are already on the ground. My husband and I were talking about it this morning walking to my work. Most new pilgrims often don't realize that May and September are the busiest times to walk. They walk when they can...
I have not seen them measure bags on the bus (or train). They just go under the bus. They dont give you a baggage claim ticket, you just put it under the bus yourself and get it out when you arrive. Do you have time to send from Madrid or Pamplona or have it picked up at your hotel DHL for...
I've seen some photos and the updates to kitchen and bathrooms look really great! FICS is doing good things there. I believe volunteer hospitaleras from Canada this half of the month!
