To those who brought a tent: How do I keep the total weight down?

Instead of a tent had you considered a tarp/hiking pole set up? YouTube is your friend here but isn't too bad

    Mercados

From an old (2016) Camino journal: Cacabelos street market "9th and 26th of each month" They DO sell socks. however, - bought some hand knitted woollen ones that lasted for years.

    Towels

"A towel is just about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can carry. Partly because it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of...

Is tap water safe to drink in Portugal?

Maybe, in Portugal, it would be labelled potável because, you know, they speak Portuguese and not Spanish? ;)

Taxi? Can they find us in the middle of nowhere?

I did Roncesvalles to Pamplona in one hump in 2003 because of a bed shortage in Zubiri/closed refugio at Larrasoaña. Back then catching a taxi was considered cheating so I plodded on and on and on and arrived at the outskirts of Pamplona at 9pm. Next day I staggered across the city to Cizur...

Guardia Civil returning lost passports to owners

Following my Camino Ingles in 2018 I lost my passport and sadder still, my credential, on the night before I was due to fly home to the UK. The taxi for the next day was booked, I had a laminated copy of the data pages and my UK driving licence so . . . The desk at EasyJet were fine about it...

    What about “té con leche”?😀

Do NOT, on any account, ask for "té con leche" in Spain you'll probably get what you ask for - while up on the Sierra Nevada in a Swiss style bar I plumped for hot chocolate while my companion asked for té con leche and got precisely that: a cup of hot milk with a teabag floating in it...

Backpack is 2 kg too heavy TwT

I heard it was the IDF from research into the ideal weight carried by a soldier on foot patrol in the Negev . . . mind you that was from a fighter pilot in the IDF and everything he carried sat behind the ejection seat of an F15!

One (water) bottle to rule them all?

    Well I know that now . . . . ;)

One (water) bottle to rule them all?

The biggest problem I found was keeping the tube clean inside - it had a tendency to go manky if anything other than water was used - I like to flavour my water with squirt of concentrated fruit squash.

One (water) bottle to rule them all?

Surely just the rebirth of the old Blue Desert Smartube? https://www.gearaholic.com/products/blue-desert-smartube Which have been around for years and years

1,000 Miles in a Lumbar Pack: Ultralight Camino de Santiago Packing List

I agree about the Strapettes - a worthwhile investment. You can use the provided single strap across the body (like a courier bag) but the Strapettes hold the load closer in to the small of your back. I've used the daypack for long weekend hostelling and had no problems with it although is on...

    Metro-style map of the Caminos

Such clarity! Just straight lines and 45 degree angles - I wonder if Harry Beck had any idea of how much his design would influence cartographers around the world?

    Taramundi Knives and León

I love shops like that. You go in for some batteries and come out with a cow bell, espadrilles, a wooden spoon and some woolly socks . . . . .

Should I bring my own Mercado bag?

On my first Camino in 2001 I took along a cotton tote bag I'd picked up at a trade fair. It had longer than normal handles which meant I could put my head through them and it rested on my chest. It became know, rather unfairly in my opinion, as "Jeff's nosebag". I've taken a modified (foam...

    Good snack for the Hospitales

    Urchin?

    Good snack for the Hospitales

Known to the British as "pork scratchings" - high salt and fat content, not recommended for those with fragile teeth.

    Small Folding Knife - Buses/Trains in 2024

Seems very hit and miss. Last year I went through Leon, Oviedo, Palencia, San Sebastian and Bilbao RENFE stations without having to have any scan whatsoever. Same with several FEVE stations though, to be honest, it's mainly a commuter route and many of the stations were little more than bus...

    Rucksack flight bag

Consider the impact on Spanish landfill sites - the country has an enormous problem of their own with discarded plastics (the material from agricultural polytunnels in the south is causing terrible environmental problems) perhaps we should think twice before contributing to it?

    Hitchhiking on the Camino?

On my last CF there was a group of 4 cars that went the whole way from SJPP to SdC supporting some European pilgrims. The took it in turns to drive/walk a few kilometres a day. By the time we reached Castrojeriz they were even parking outside of the hostals and refugios. On reaching SdC I...
